I can't afford payments.

Hi all,
I've recently and still currently, been off sick from work.
This has led to me only being paid SSP and left me with about £320 total per month.
My car insurance is £180 a month, I've just paid it for this month leaving me extremely broke but don't think I'll be able to afford future payments. Is there anything I can do? I don't mind not driving but I don't think I can cancel it altogether without being charged?
I have the same problem with my phone contract I guess but that is 'bearable'.
Obviously when working noone expects to be off long-ish term with an illness so what can I do?

Where is the vehicle kept?
If it's off the public highway then you should be able to 'phone your insurers and ask them to reduce cover to "laid up, fire and theft".
This is assuming you are not going to be driving the car at all and will probably only be considered if it's for at least 28 days.
Hopefully, this can reduce your payments.0 -

Hi Chalkie,
It's kept outside my house on the road. Is this still possible and what kind of payments would I be looking at do you estimate?0 -
No - sadly not.
If it;s on the road it needs at least Third Party cover.
Do you have a friend/relative with some off-road space?0 -
In terms of you phone contract - phone your provider and ask if you can reduce to a lower tariff. Explain that you are not working and only claiming benefits and may have to default on the contract otherwise.
You may find they'll drop you down to a cheaper package.

Hi Tixy,
I'll try that with my phone tariffs, hopefully they'll do something.
My car insurance runs out mid july. I'm on a 12 month, paying £179 a month.0 -

A private driveway should be valid for this. As long as it's not on a public road/in public space, it should be ok.0 -
Christ on a bike, £180 a month?
What do you drive? a Bugatti Veyron?
Good luck."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0 -
I'm not sure if every insurer will do it, but if you can keep it on someones driveway then phone them and ask them if you can "freeze" your policy?!
Obviously you won't be able to drive it, but if that's not a problem it will save you £180 a month.
I did this (albeit 10 years ago) when I was 19. I broke my leg so clearly wouldn't be using my car, and my insurance allowed me to freeze my policy for 4 months with the car just left on my parents driveway, and then pick it up where I left off once I'd had my cast removed and could drive again!
Worth asking?!0 -
£2000 per year insurance is very high. It may be worth finding out what the cancellation fee and pay it off with the car value.0
