Council Tax default, where's it recorded?

About 5 or so years back I had an arrears on my council tax and an attachment to earings where my employer had to pay money directly to the council form my salary.

I've checked my credit file and can't see a record of this and reading on the net I've found that council tax arrears, magistrate fines and this sort of thing aren't recorded on your credit file.

So where is this likely to be recorded? How long is it recorded for? And who has access to it?

Generaly Council Tax defaults are not recorded by anyone other than the Councils themselves for official purposes, it isnt recorded on your credit file (Although I wish it was).

When we issue a summons, our internal system records it so we can see peoples payment records, the internal court records would record a liabilty order if it got to that stage and so would the baillifs own records but these records are not open to public access or scrutiny.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Is this held forever or is it removed after 6 years?

I have a security check with a new employer coming up and they said they'll also check all my previous financial history. As it's a government role they will obviously have access to a lot of information and I was wondering if this will pop up.

I paid it off ages back, but the fact that I had an attachment to earnings is worrying me here now.

Would assume any future employer could only check info held through the credit ref agency's.
    CIS can maybe confirm.

  • I would normally think that, but this is a government role which includes some intensive security checks so I wasn't sure if they'd have access or not.
