I have been under a DMP for two and a half years, since redundancy. But have found things a real struggle and have now found out we have been overpaid tax credits. Really need help, don't know where I stand with DMP having now got into more debts.

I'm sure overpaid tax credits would be viewed as an unintentional debt as its not the same as going out and getting a credit card.

I would speak to your DMP provider and ask to reduce payments until the tax credits have been paid off.

Government debt has to be paid off.

Sorry, can't offer any advice, but want to say - hang in there.
  • Go with Cyril's advice & speak to the DMP provider with a view to rescheduling the DMP. Overpaid tax credits certainly aren't your fault & it's actually in everyone's interest for the DMP to be within your means. And if you want to see some FAQs on DMPs then do a search for the Consumer Credit Counselling Service (it's a registered debt advice charity).

  • Don't know about DMP but I had to pay back over £700 overpaid tax credits because my circumstances changed. I phoned them and arranged to pay £10 a month interest free. They asked me how much I could afford to pay and I'm sure they would have accepted less but I wanted to pay it off asap for my circumstances. They set up a direct debit for me and sent a payment schedule. My final payment is made in June this year.

    Good luck with it all.

I was overpaid tax credits a couple of years ago. When I phoned them I offered £10 a month which they accepted, they even asked me if I was sure I could afford that much. They were very friendly & set up a direct debit for me, I wouldnt normally recommend paying a debt by direct debit but I had no problem.

I owe £1800 tax credits I got a lovely lady on the phone who agreed to take £20 a month as payment. This was good as at first they wanted it paid over 12 months.

My tip be nice to whoever answers the phone:eek:

Great idea if you can come to an arrangement with the DWP but if not, contact your debt advisor, we thought we may have been overpaid (but thankfully we werent) and my debt advisor had told me it could be added into my dmp if necessary. Good luck!
You'll make my day if I know I've been helpful to you in some small way,
