I'm not doing very well at getting round the diaries, sorry.....I will have a concerted effort tonight. The relief of saving the Captain has wiped me out I'm afraid.

Today is a full day at work :( so once I'm on the sofa tonight I'm not moving!:D

I still owe a baked risotto recipe, maybe tonight's the night I post it ;)

A quick update on money. I went into the phone shop and got my tariff reduced by £10, not as much as I had hoped, but a reduction all the same. My contract is up for renewal in May and if I don't upgrade I can get the tariff down to £10 a month. This will be the route I'll go down.

I cancelled an online subscription for £5.37 a month. Now the question is - do I cancel the boiler insurance? £18.52 a month, to cover the boiler, heating and electric circuit. The boiler is old and wouldn't be covered for a new one if it broke. Next door but three is a gas engineer and would come and fix things if I asked. Should I cancel the policy? What do you all think?

  • If you cancel the boiler insurance would you start an emergency fund incase it died?

I was thinking that, but i guess the whole point of the exercise is to save on the expenditure, full stop? and if you are short of money, you will never set that money to one side? Difficult decision, unfortunately. But it sounds like you do need some sort of boiler fund. Still, you have THAT blanket, of which we are all envious ? :rotfl:

I must admit Piq I cancelled the boiler insurance.. I live in fear of it breaking down. However we cancelled it over 2 years ago and I have spent money servicing it ... So it has worked out cheaper so far.... touch wood and please god lol :) I was chatting to a neighbour the other day and he has put me in touch with a guy who is really a lot cheaper than the chap we were using so if anything should go wrong, I will contact him. Please dont let my boiler go wrong now:rotfl:
We have only paid a small amount of the debts last month as it was a hellishly expensive month.. MOT, twins 21st birthday, My son needing help... So intending next 3 days to be NSD...
Hope work is okay today for you... x

That's a hard one with the boiler cover due to it being old.Mine was invaluable when I had the old boiler as used it a lot but when I bought the new one haven't had it since as it has 5 year warranty as long as it's serviced.Maybe you could try an online comparison to see if you can save there

OK if the boiler is old check for yourself what is covered exactly and also speak to contact down the road for a professional opinion, personally I say service it but don't cover breakdown, I have had bad experiences of this type of policy, there is a blinking loop hole to stop you getting the money and if you can get this plus the £10 from the mobile then you are closer to covering the money needed for the OD payment aren't you?

Have you checked out and seen if you can get a new boiler under the govt schemes currently out there - thinking if it is free to change boiler and new one is cheaper to run than current and also warranty then this is a moot point on breakdown?

As usual, stirling advice from missrlr - certainly something to think about. I don't have boiler insurance as the cost of repairs and service in the 10 yrs have had it works out much cheaper, and besides, if it doesn't buy you a new one when this goes then it's not money well spent. Just my twopennorth.

Sadly, the Gov't cracked down on the new boiler schemes - I know as I got one of the very last ones to be installed under the old Warm Front scheme.
Basically you now have to have no heating and be on income support with kids u. 5 years or be a pensioner to get one.

It was a godsend to get mine, as I had a cheap, unreliable boiler that had been badly installed, ancient, broken radiators and now I have a lovely top of the range reliable boiler and smart new rads.
I got mine as I receive higher rate mobility allowance component of Disability Living Allowance.
