  • CCCS won't want your redundancy money and the advice is to use it to live on until you find a new job.

You say you have called CCCS about your redundancy yet you still have a lot of questions that you haven't got the answer to. Pick up the phone and ring them and write down the questions that you want answering.

You have to be honest with CCCS about everything otherwise they won't be able to help you (including the redundancy amount).

Thanks. Yes, it is a lump sum, but does that mean when I am out of work, I am still expected to pay them £126 a month?
Technically I am unemployed and unwaged and signing on.

It would be nice to have another job lined up and start 28 days later so I can keep it.... but there are so many strings attached.
Ok, is the "lump sum" an ex qratia payment i.e tax free, or is it taxable?
VERY generally if it is taxable it is considered to be earnings and therefore CCCS would be entitled to part of it BUT if you are unemployed the DWP will expect the earnings part to cover x weeks and willnot pay benefits for those x weeks so unless you get another job in that time and have more earnings then CCCS will just have the normal payments in that time.
If it is NOT taxable and is an exgratia payment it is not considered to be earnings and therefore CCCS would not expect any of it.

You would need to speak to CCCS thought to find out their precise policies on this.

Yes, but sadly I have known some underhand companies to split the payment and make part of it taxable..... I know this is a council but I would hate for it to happen and someone to plan wrongly. Its far better to call CCCS though and ask a direct question as in will you expect payment of or from my ex gratia untaxed lump sum!

  • Again Rochdale Guy don't get caught up in tax things and NI, CCCS policy is to allow you to live on it until you find a new job.

  • Thanks everyone. I have just read this which is worrying me now:

"For those benefits which are affected by savings, the basic rule is that if you have savings above the upper savings limit, which is currently £16,000, you will not be eligible to receive any benefit. If you have savings below the lower savings limit, currently £6000, your benefits will be unaffected. (Note that these values can change over time, so you will need to check for the latest values.)
For savings in between the two limits, your savings are assumed to yield a weekly “tariff income” of £1 for every £250 of savings. This equates to an assumed annual tariff income of approximately £50 for every £250 of savings, equivalent to an interest rate of 20%, which is clearly absurd and unattainable in the real world. Nonetheless, this is the basis the government uses for their calculations. The benefit payments you receive each week will be reduced by your assumed tariff income.

So, if the lower limit is £6000, and you have £10,000 saved, £4000 of that will be counted.
£4000 divided by 250 is 16, so you will get £16 less per week in benefits."

    taken from: http://www.redundancyexpert.co.uk/your-savings-benefits.html

What if my redundancy lump sum was between £6-£9k then?
I get less per week in benefits then?

    This is such a minefield...

Does that stand regardless of what your final lump sum is (assuming it's UNDER £16k, which it will definitely be....)

    :wall:

    Hi, thanks for the post.

I know that seems high, £17 for my monthly broadband. £24.50 for B.T. landline and calls, plus £10 a month on PAYG mobile.

I tried to switch to Post Office line rental (which gives free calls to mobiles at weekends and much cheaper daytime calls), but they totally messed my order up and never accepted me as a customer, and they never answered any of my complaint emails and letters :(

That is a brilliant price. Will consider that come next January.

I was paying around £1k a year for insurance, shocking isn't it :(
I only got it down to £750 this year as a co-worker let me out them down as a named driver. Which is a big help. Don't know what I'll do next year at renewal time when I don't work in this current job and with her :(

The £100 a month on fuel is personal, taking people to apointments etc etc. Can't cut back on that, sorry.

It's a rented Council flat, I am not allowed to take in a lodger, it's against the tenancy agreement.

Fair point, but I am already thin as a stick after living off Smart Price Baked Beans on toast for 6 months.

Yes thanks. I know I have a lot of time. I just as bad as it sounds, want to get my redundancy notice NOW, no more being mentally tormented and delayed.

I will do thanks. I have seen things I also have go for lots of money on eBay, but when I list them, they just don't sell! I even practically copy the wording off an item that has sold for a lot of money. I think eBay, the National Lottery and scratchcards aren't meant for me - I never make anything back :(

I think I will have to now, thanks.

I appreciate people saying that but I just don't see how pills or tablets can help. I'll still wake up each day and I will still be losing my job, still owe £26,000 and still want to keep my car....

But cheers for the suggestions, concern and help
car wrapping could help you, its on here maybe take a look.

Okay, if someobody cares to explain what possible course of action my GP will take then?

I'm not going to get hooked on anti-depressants. As for talking to someone other than online and "on here", unless they are prepared to lend me £26k interest free, I don't see how they can help (apart from thinking I am totally nucking futs....) :(

    Thanks though
im sufferng with stress and slight depression my GP has refered me to a group mood managment course which is really helping, you dont have to stand up and say yout problems or anything things like that basically they just sit there talk you through situations etc and give you excerises so you can in a way help yourself out of the stress im 4 weeks into a 8 week course and its really helping, think about it, they have people there to help you without the medication.
