I haven't set my budget - I'm simply aiming for as few spend days and as little unplanned/non-essential spend as possible. It's too hard for me to know when something will crop up, for example this week I had to spend £10 at the pharmacy (and that was the own brand version!) and also £30 on physio.
  • I am exactly the same! I have about £400 left pm after paying off bills and debts. But I seem to lose track of where the money goes!

I tried a budgeting spreadsheet, but that failed!

i have therefore joint the Weekly Spend Challenge. I have set myself an amount for the week, and will carry that in my purse. Once it's gone, it's gone! I found I was coping better when I was on JSA and didn't have this extra money haha!

I'm still going to keep track of things i've bought though through an App on my iPhone.

  • If you are spending £400 a month maybe you should keep a spending diary so you know what you are spending it on. Even if you allow yourself £40 a week only in your purse it might go so fast you'll struggle. This is where the spending diary comes in handy. If £20 is on snacks and coffee at work then you can tackle that issue and free up more money for yourself :)
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

Don't think of it in monthly terms, break it down. Your £400 is roughly £100 a week, or you could see it as £10 a day (leaving an extra £100 floating around to play with.

Pretend you have a serious cigarette habit. Every day, take £10 and buy the fags you will need for the day. So in reality, give the tenner to a friend or family member who you can trust to be strong. If you were super organised and passed a post office or something on your way to work you could drop your tenner off there.

By the end of the month, if you've been smoking as much as you should've and not cheating, you should have clean, clean lungs and savings of around £250 :D

Once you have that first month under your belt it becomes addictive and habits start to form and it should be easier to add to your nest egg...

Thank you, it definitely worth looking at it from that point of view, looks like I might be setting up a new post office account :) I walk past one on my way home every day, and on my lunch hour so no excuses really!
