Cast iron skillets

I've wanted one of these for cooking, but not sure where to source one from. I've tried freecycle with no luck, and I've looked on ebay etc but there's so many that are very cheap and I don't want to buy something that won't last, although I'm not sure what sort of quality I'm looking out for if that makes sense. Can any one help please?

The only cast iron skillet that I use is a Le Crueset one. I have had it for many years and although it is not in daily use, it has remained in excellent condition even the coating has stayed perfect.

There may well be cheaper ones on the market and someone else may come along with a more cost effective alternative.

    It is Cast Iron.

The only way you can damage it is with a sledge hammer.

We have one, and once we got it "Run in" no problems.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • Thank you for your replies. What I mean to say is, there's some on amazon/ebay etc for £9, some for £30... what would the difference be?

le cruseut have an enamel coating which means they don't need seaosning, some other's come pre seasoned but with the the cheaper one's you will need to pre-season to stop them rusting

I bought one for a fiver from Lidl! Its enamelled on the outside. They have them in blue and orange and they do two sized of casserole dished to match too. I love it.

If you buy the uncoated cast Iron one, Once you have seasoned it (No big deal). It is bomb proof.

spike it needs re-seasoning - basically coating in oil and heating up - either on the hob or in the oven - do this 2 or 3 times and you're away.

    Spike,

First you will need to give it a thorough clean to get rid of any rust. Washing up liquid and a scouring pad should do it.

Then you need to season it in a hot oven for 2 hours... Instructions here

Beware though, seasoning it in the oven creates a lot of smoke by it is worth it!!!
