Thank you everyone, well we're halfway there we have been looking at flats. Because OH is unemployed he needs a guarantor to lease a flat. The only way we can do it if a) I become his guarantor or b) my name goes on the lease.
It's going to be the same either way I'm going to be paying our rent. What does everyone suggest is the best way?
There's also the risk if we split up as I know I will be able to afford to pay the rent but what if he causes any damage?

Surely if your wages are enough to secure the flat, then both of your names can go on the lease as you will both be living there? When my OH moved in with me, the flat was in my name only, and I had to let them know he was moving in with me so his name could go on the lease too.
If it has to be in your name only because your OH is unemployed, then as soon as he gets a job, get his name put on there too.
I'm in the same position that you would be in TBH. If I split with my OH, and he did damage to the flat, the whole deposit is mine, so I would lose out (mind you, been trying to get rid of him for 11 years, so doubt that would happen).
Hope you can sort it out.

Having joint names just means you are jointly and severably liable. This means if one disappears, the other carries the can in terms of unpaid rent, damages or whatever.
For your situation, if he damages anything, you will have to pay because you're the only one with money.
Similarly, if his name *isn't* on and you split up. You can turf him out with no possible legal arguments."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

The trouble because there are so many unemployed that they need a guaranteed income, they won't accept proof of my savings!!!
So we had to get jobs and it was left to me0 -

There is that ZTD I could turf him out and have more space I think I can cover the expenses on my own now the downside is that if he does any damage, I remember with my ex we did that and my name went on the lease and had no problems.0 -
We went and opened a joint account yesterday, my ISA is with the same bank and had a near miss, it displayed my ISA balance
The joint account got opened successfully and then we went flat hunting, both of which flats were in the same block next to each other. The only thing was the front door of the block wasn't secure and looked like someone had started a fire
I was in a fire last year in the same circumstances and it was a total de ja vu for me and terrified me so we won't go for that block.
So back to square one.....:(0 -
Today is my last day of being unemployed :j
So I need to get myself sorted and get my travel arranged.
We have some flat viewings next week hopefully that one of them will be nice enough and the good news is we both go on the lease except I pay for everything
I am thinking of a new diary but not until we've found somewhere!0 -
Good luck for your first day at work tomorrow
