Breaking DH's financial links with ex GF

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this (Mods please feel free to move to a more appropriate home if required!) and couldn't find much under a search, perhaps my search words weren't the right ones.

My DH had a joint account with his (ex) GF before I met him, I am concerned that her financial history and behaviour could affect our joint and/or our individual credit ratings now that DH and I have a joint account.

How can we go about getting this link (if one in fact exists?) severed?

Many thanks!
Icey

Check his credit files (experian, equifax, callcredit (also called noddle)). If a financial association appears on the report but the account is closed then he needs to file a notice of disassociation with all 3 credit reference agencies.

OK, can he simply call the agencies above to check if there is an association or is it an online form and fee job?

I'm assuming they won't speak to me about his credit history, rightly so for data protection and all that gumpf.

Does he think the account was closed? Suggest he rings the bank and asks them?

Statuatory Credit reference records cost £2, can be done on-line but take longer if it is a common name, he has moved about a lot; they may send out a password. He needs all three.

He just needs to get the statutory credit reports for £2 from each agency to see if there is a link or not. You can order by post or online. If online it needs to be a credit card in his name.

Then once you see if there are any links you'll know if he needs to file the notice of disassociation (which can at that point be done by completing a set online form about the disassociation with experian and equifax, not sure whether you can do callcredit online or only by letter).

The account was definitely closesd, I am just a little concerned that the ex's financial history / behaviour could impact our joint or individual credit records due to this old account.

Not sure if I am worrying unnecessarily?

Thanks so far for the responses,

I don't think you are worrying unnecessarily - it does need sorting.

Its likely they'll still be associated if neither have filed to disassociate.
And if she has a poor credit history then it will affect his chances of getting credit / what rates he'll be offered and the same if you apply for things jointly.

  • Yes I agree with the above, I still had a link 7 years later even though all I did was apply for a joint loand that was NOT approved.
