Sausages - what's really in them!!

Options
Did anyone see that "you are what you eat" program last night?

Is it really true that sausages contain that stuff?? (Snouts, ears etc ) Made me feel really ill and have toad in the hole planned!!

How can I tell what sausages to get (I never buy value sausages and always choose the highest meat content I can but she said that they class snout and ear as "meat")???

Any tips - no local butcher to my home to ask about either!!! :o

I saw that and sausages were on the menu at my house too. I now feel really bad that I might have been feeding this horrible stuff to my kids.

I am now wondering how difficult it is to make your own, like you say if snout and ear are classed as meat then surely that means even the 80% ones contain it!!!!
  • Whats wrong with snouts and ears, all pig meat, only thing different from leg of pork is your perception of them! Where do you draw the line of what is 'acceptable' meat and what is not,in the case of snouts from the eyes back, or is the whole head horrible ? You can eat the whole pig apart from the squeek !!

I'd take it with a hefty pinch of salt, TBH. "Dr" Gillian McKeith is pretty anti red meat; and while it's true that value sausages and frankfurters contain the kind of meat you'd be less than pleased to serve up, the better quality of sausages don't. A high meat content is a good indicator, and a reliable brand - Duchy, Porkinson, Helen Browning are all good brands. Are there any farm shops or farmers markets near you? If you're really concerned about what goes into your bangers, you could always buy a sausage maker, and make your own!

Well to be honest it wasn't so much those bits that put me off but the eyes, sinews and fat that she said all counts as "meat".

Surely those bits don't contain the "goodness" and benefit you expect from eating meat ?

If I buy pork chops then I don't eat the fat bits, so why do I want to eat them ground up and mashed into my sausages?

If I buy fish, I don't eat the head and tail either!!!

any recommendations where to get good wheat free sausages online ?
http://www.sallyssizzlers.com/ looks good - anyone tried them?

I usually buy from online supermarkets and there's not much info on the 'free from' sausages. I don't want to substitute wheaty fillers for other rubbish and high fat content.
I don't have the time or energy to keep popping in supermarkets on the off chance of them having gluten free sausages in, stock levels tend to be hit and miss.
    TIA

For decades now, hot dogs and sausages have suffered from a fair share of misperceptions about their content and manufacture. But today's traditional hot dogs and sausages are growing leaner. The fact is the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires by law that meats used in hot dogs and sausages must be muscle meat, just like the fresh ground meat sold in supermarkets. The vast majority of hot dogs and sausages consist of the same high quality meats that shoppers buy straight out of their grocer's meat case.

Well that's what the sausagefans website says. So hopefully it is just the value stuff and Gillian McPoo is just trying to scare everyone away from their dinner!!! ;)
