Thanks Achtunglady for the recipe, DS1 and I have just made these (with the adition of a tsp or so of ground ginger) and they are lovely!
just a question for any expert biscuit-makers who may be reading: whenever I make biscuits using this method (mix dry ingredients then heat marge and syrup and stir in) they always come out of the oven *very* gooey and floppy, and only really take on a shape as they cool. Spiddy you need to leave them on the tray until cool and hard
i use a piece of reusable baking parchment so they never stick.

i just checked my 1954 copy of 'good housekeeping's cookery compendium' and couldn't find 'nig nogs' (although it does have '!!!!!! minstrel cakes' p141!) don't know if its the same as you had, a large heavyweight black leather book with gold writing/picture of a cooker on spine? i use it quite a lot, and never noticed these cakes before! shocking!0
