Question about CCJ's/Defaults

Hi,
Hopefully someone can give me a bit of advice as i'm not sure what to do.
A bit of background first:
I got myself into a bit of a mess last year when i lost my job and I got a few default notices, I eventually managed to make agreements with all my creditors which I have been paying. One of the defaults was for Next directory and they sold my debt on to Moorcroft. I arranged with them to pay £10 a month by direct debit, they sent me a form which I took to my bank, for some reason it didn't get started and they didn't recieve my first payment, I got a letter from them saying i had missed a payment and to pay £10 immediately, this was in between Christmas and New Year and I was away at my Mothers for the holiday so I didn't get it until I go back onthe 5th Jan, I paid the £10 straightaway online but 2 days later I got court papers. I admitted the claim, bar the £10 I had paid nand sent papers back to Moorcroft, the total amount including court charges was £370. then today I got a letter saying that I could prevent a CCJ by paying in full by mid feb but now the amount has gone up to £400.
What I'd like some advice on please:
What is the difference between a default and a CCJ and it's impact on credit file...bearing in mind I have a few defaults will a ccj make much difference.
WHy has the claim gone up from £370 to £400
I can't afford to pay the full amount, has anyone had any experience of offering Moorcroft a full and final settlement payment?
Thanks for taking time to read.
