I am 46 years old and am in debt.
To be honest I've been in debt all my life. There are no excuses, I've worked all my life from 18 years of ages apart from a 6 month break when I had my son 24 years ago.
Ten years ago I had to start over again after I lost everything when I tried to run my own business so when I met my current husband (he had nothing either) we had to get everything on credit, plus he was having, and still has, to pay maintenance for his two daughters (and so he should!).
I don't have much to show for my debt - I live in a nice house but we owe £114000 on this. We have had a nice holiday every year and had meals out so I suppose that's where most of the debt came from. I also helped my son through University, perhaps helping a bit too much at times considering my situation.
Anyway, I'm not looking for any sympathy, there are people on here in far worse situations than me and I truly believe I have turned the corner mentally and I'm ready and willing to do whatever it takes to get myself out of this debt. I'm still gnawing away at hubby - although he's receptive to a degree, he still thinks "it will be alright in the end". No it won't.
Hubby and I have an agreement that he pays the bills and I pay the mortgage and food.
Since November I have been reading this site and it's the best thing that's happened to me!
In October/November I had an overdraft of £800 which I have now got down to zero. This in itself had made me feel so much better. I have switched all my credit cards onto 0% and I intend to pay off as much as I can every month until they have gone!
I have a long way to go, but I would just like to say thank you so very much to Martin and you guys on here for giving me the inspiration and motivation to get rid of this noose that hangs above my head forever.
Cheers!
