What is Home for Life?
Home for Life is the RSPCA’s free service, giving pet owners peace of mind. It means we’ll do all we can to find a new, loving home for your pet if you should pass away.

morbid but a nice service.

thank you so much for the post, I'd no idea RSPCA did that sort of thing, whilst my dog is old you never know what might happen.
  • How does this reconcile with the common experience that they euthanise pretty much everything? Could it be something to do with wanting the money from the wills - 'ta for the money, pity we did all we could but couldn't find a home, so kitty had to be put to sleep before the inspector even left the street'?

This isn't a freebie - it's a calculated marketing plan to get old people to increase their income.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

"Please note, leaving us a gift in your Will is entirely discretionary and not a condition of the Home for Life scheme."

Of course they would like money, but there are unfortunately people who worry there will not be somebody in their life who will care for a pet when they go. The RSPCA will be notified of a pet being in a property and will go in to take the animal to an appropriate centre.

"The reassurance that you have made plans for your loving pet to be cared for after you're gone."

Yeah sadly it doesn't fit with their euthanasia policy, including the 10 Alsations the RSPCA killed with a bolt gun and pithing after their owner died:

Maybe the owner just hadn't signed up to this scheme? I wouldn't trust the RSPCA with my animals!

My mums an avid animal person, doesnt use any item tested on animals, works for a rescue where she rehome dogs, reporting animal cruelty etc etc and ive heard her say something about lost pets and been ethunised after a certain period (and not a long period). she refuses to donate to them. she donates to pdsa and dogs trust.

my friend used to work there and she knew someone who had 12 dogs and 4 cats and some fish, she had a life time ban from keeping animals by the rspca and when the police and rspca kept getting involved they woulnt do anything they let her carry on keeping them, after that i lost all hope in them.
it might not be much, but its better than a kick in the teeth:rotfl:

    please note this
we’ll do our best to look after your beloved pets, and do everything we can to find them loving new homes.

this scheme does not mean that your animal will not be pts, if it is an old animal, one with issues, has an ongoing medical condition or is a breed/colouration that is known to be hard to rehome [staffy, staffy x, black cats, working dogs, etc] your animal is no more likely to be kept alive and rehomed than any other animal in the shelter

the above clause is a get out of jail free card. dont be fooled

i wouldnt let the rspca have any of my pets when i died, worked for them years ago and they would put cats alseep for having a broken leg or something simple like that, if they didnt have the space for it in the cattery or the funds available they would put it asleep, couldnt believe it.

If you have a dog your worried about who will look after it when you die, i would sign up to the dogstrust scheme, more info here http://www.dogstrust.org.uk/legacies/default.aspx they will find a new suitable home for your dog. They never put a dog to sleep unless really unwell

Like others I will never trust the RSPCA, it seems when Rolf Harris & TV crew are around the are great, but my experience, with an injured, shot barn owl, was the exact opposite

No help, just blanked, no offer of the Rolf Harris type of inspector rushing to help, the only advice was kill it, which I did with a spade to the neck, and very sad heart, vowing to never, ever, give one penny to RSPCA

PS much the same response when my dog was run over, basically it is "tough !!!!!! and we do not care", just where do the Rolf Harris inspectors live, or does it really need a TV crew to get them going?
