I would class that as stealing - You could have returned it to them fairly easy. There is a difference between finding money on the street and seeing somebody lose money and you pocketing it.
Finding money is great but it does raise the dilemma of how much you could find before reporting it to the police.0 -

I'm sorry but I'd call that stealing too, my DH did this just before christmas and luckily came back just in time to see two 10 year olds walking off with the money.
It took some real hassle to get them to give it back and it was money we could not afford to lose. It's the first and only time my DH had ever done this but he had so much on his mind that he just walked away from the machine.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I think there is a difference between finding money on the street such as loose change, or something like £5 and making sure no one around you has just dropped it, and taking money from an ATM.
I couldn't have done that, I would be heartbroken if it happened to me.Not buying unnecessary toiletries 2024 26/53 UU, 25 IN0 -

Dog poos on pavement; coin drops on ground and collects 10 million nasty bacteria from poo; child picks up coin and 2 million bacteria transfer to child’s hand: child sucks fingers or eats a sweet and swallows 1 million bacteria.
I’m never touching a coin again.:D

When I was a kid I used to wander around school and dinner and notice coppers on the ground. so I started collecting them. A year or so ago I was with a friend. He put his hand in his pocket and it was full of coppers, so he threw them onto the ground and said he hated them!!
Since I started collecting 1 and 2 pence pieces I've made over £100 :beer:Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0 -

I follow basic sensible hygiene practices but I’m really not obsessive about it.

I remember my Home Economics teacher at school insisting that we must wash our hands immediately on entering the kitchen. The next thing we had to do was hand in the money we paid for ingredients used, which of course necessitated washing our hands again. :rolleyes2
I still pick up copper coins in the street when it's convenient to do so (e.g. when I'm not carrying shopping in both hands and when there are no school pupils, especially from my son's school, in eyeshot). Since I'm in the habit of looking, I sometimes find larger amounts of money. Though I will hand any large denomination banknotes in to the police, loose banknotes are hardly ever claimed from lost property, and are usually returned to the finder.0
