I think it depends on the bank. My daughter banks with Abbey, and she has a terrible time taking her coppers in. They only accept a pathetically small amount (can't remember waht, mght be three bags of coppers or something silly), so it's a bit of a pain for her.

I bank with the One account (Royal BoS), and they don't give me problems with taking bags of coins in.

Thanks, hopefully Barclays will take them all. I go past often enough and I could do a few at a time but I always have the baby in her pushchair and they have 5 large steps to get into our branch so i have to bump her up and down them. :wall:

Off to start bagging up.... :D

Since I started collecting 1 and 2 pence pieces I've made over £100
How long have you been collecting? I'm sure I get much less then £1/year doing this.

I always raid my Husband's change when he gets in from work* and save the 1ps, 2ps and 5ps in a money box for our two-and-a-half year old daughter. When she has one bag of each denomination (so £7 as the bags take £1 of pennies, £1 of 2ps, or £5 of 5ps) we bag them up and pay them into her Nationwide account! She is richer than us!

*my husband is fully aware of this, I don't steal them from him! ;)

  • Being a Good Jew Girl, I have always looked after the pennies so that the pounds will look after themselves. I hate waste of any sort and am over joyed to find many coins on the floor, sometimes even a £1 or two.

The best find was a £50 note my friend found on the floor in a club. it was stamped on and a bit dirty, but what a find. She didn't share it with us though and didn't even offer to buy a round.

I found a £5 note once one morning on my way to work. Thought I was seeing things, people in Blackheath are obviously throughing their money away.

I was told once that the queen owns all money on found on the land and that money found on the floor of a store is legally owned by the shop / store. I'm not sure of this but if I was challenged I would just play dumb.

My son is 5 and regularly picks up coins he sees on the floor. I empty my purse of 2p and 1p and 5p pieces every few days and give them to him. He has a large plastic Cola bottle he saves them and large tub he fills to play with. I got him a coin sorter thing for Xmas and he had £50 odd in the play money - there was some £1 and £2 from his pocket money too. I'm trying to persuade him to put most of it in the bank to get interest but he likes to be able to see it and touch it.

In Tesco express they have little doors at the tills to keep the baskets in. He once found a £1 and now checks them all if no-one is there - if he finds anything he tells the store assistant and they have always told him to keep it.

He is as pleased to find 1p as he is to find a £1

If you are collecting them, don't use the machines in Sainsbury's - they charge something like 7% just to save you a bit of time bagging up coins.
  • I always pick up change in the street, much to the amusement/embarassment of my friends.

Found a £5 note one day when I got out of my car (right at my door). Looked round to make sure it wasn't somebodies and then pocketed it.

I save all my 1ps, 2ps and 5ps in a pottery owl. I usually get about £10 worth when it's full!

I do the same - every night he puts his change on the dressing table and I 'tidy up' all the £2 coins and 20ps. Then in the morning he picks up his 'reduced' cash, but leaves all the copper and 5ps, so I 'tidy' these up too! I always save my £2 coins and often my 20ps. Together we saved £235.78!!!!!:j :j I cashed the whole lot into my account yesterday at the HSBC -(bagged up). They were fine about it all (tho the queue did get rather long behind me even tho I did chose a really quiet time to go in :o )
