For a minute I thought this thread was going to be about cutbacks in the Police

I'm sat here with a 2 litre jug 2/3 full of 2ps, a large mixing bowl just under half full of pennies and 1/8 of a 1.75 lite bottle full of 5ps collected over the last couple of years.
Need to count them today and cash them up for spending on classes and swimming etc for the baby. Anyone want to guess how much I have?
Also do banks readily cash them for you or are they awkward. I seem to have some memory of them not being keen.New to MSE :hello:

My kids are exactly the same, they see coins of any sort and pick them up, they have their own saving jars aswell as I have mine.
My DS makes me laugh when ever we go into town. Especially on the cobbled market. Around the fruit n veg stalls, he's always finding money dropped, either by customers or the stall holders. Once he came back with £3.25.
We have a demi john nearly half full of 1p, 2p, 5p - last count was around £28Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -
shinydriver, I think the best chance of not annoying the bank will be if you bag them up in proper bank bags in the proper amounts (£1 worth of 1p, £1 worth of 2p, or £5 worth of 5p but don't mix them) then they can weigh them. The bank will give you bags for free.

My bank are very happy to accept them as long as they are 'bagged up' in those little plastic money bags. They only have to weigh them then.

The MATHLETTS spent a week trawling the local ammusement arcades collecting the coins dropped on the floor or forgotten and lurking in refund slots. Between the three of them, in one week they collected over £30 which they bagged up and donated to our church for it's disabled access fund! They regularly go 'gleaning' now and each have a savings pot which we count up at the end of the summer season and compile a leader board off who has collected the most. LOLLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Thanks, I have bags ready from my bar job. Just had a dim recollection of the banks hating to weigh and confirm ammounts and restricting it to a few bags at a time. Probably dating back to the Blue Peter Appeal for 1/2p coins! :rotfl:
I guess if I am paying it into my account they can't complain :idea:New to MSE :hello:

I think it depends on the bank. My daughter banks with Abbey, and she has a terrible time taking her coppers in. They only accept a pathetically small amount (can't remember waht, mght be three bags of coppers or something silly), so it's a bit of a pain for her.
I bank with the One account (Royal BoS), and they don't give me problems with taking bags of coins in.0 -
abbey is a max of 5 bags at a time although my oh bank yorkshire will take loads as long as you are paying them into your accountbe loyal, be loud, be cas, be proud

I love doing this! since I started to walk to work I've found loads of 1ps & 2ps, tho i must admit i pretend i'm tying my shoelace if there's someone behind me! once i found a nice shiny 20p, i had a warm feeling all day at work...
I cant understand how people can just throw them away, if they find them irritating why dont they just stick them in the charity box on the counter of the nearest charity shop?
never thought about saving them up separately in a jar but sounds like a good idea, you could save them for a little treat for yourself that you wouldn't normally have? you'd enjoy it all the more knowing it hadn't cost you A PENNY hee hee0
