I am wanting to make a Truffle Torte for an alternative Xmas dessert. I have all the ingredients except the Amaretti biscuits... there seems to be a national shortage!!!!!!!!! I have seen the recipe on the OS boards but also on Delia's website so I know some of you must have made it
Just in case I cannot get any at all can anyone suggest a tried and tested alternative??????

I've used digestive biscuits and they're fine. I really can't see why you shouldn't use any type of biscuit you fancy, I think recipes are made to be altered and adapted to personal choice and what you have in the cupboard.
Enjoy the torte!0 -
I made this yesterday! But I already had Amaretti biscuits in the cupboard (from Tesco about a month ago).
Why not just use crushed digestives? The flavour won't be the same but the appearance will be very similar and its just a very thin layer anyway so I think its more for appearance than flavour.0 -
Brilliant!!! I will venture into Hemsworth and will get digestives if no Amarettis are available. I was worried because Amarettis are really light so I didn't know if for some reason digestives wouldn't work...thanks guys!!!!:DLaughing at my ancient signature...voodoobaby now 10 years old:eek:0

I think you can use digestives or any other biscuit of choice and the result will be fine. Although you put them in the base of the tin, you turn it out to serve it so the biscuit base ends up as the top of the torte.
For this reason, you don't really need a strong biscuit base to hold the torte together - the chocolate filling does that.
In fact, you don't need a biscuit base at all - but the crunchiness adds a contrasting texture to the truffle filling.
I absolutely adore this torte and it's a complete doddle to make. Would be great for little Santa helpers who want to get involved in the kitchen this weekendWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Quick thought - toasted flaked almonds would be good base and a fair match for amaretti, which have that almond tasteWarning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0

I was being ridiculously optimistic thinking there might be Amarettis in Hemsworth (although its better than my village where you can't even buy a LEMON!!!!!)...after some thought I went for Rich Tea for more of a crunchy texture (rather than the "sandy" digestive texture) and am toying with the idea of a spoonful of ground almonds in with the biscuits for the almond taste.
Thanks for all your help!!!Laughing at my ancient signature...voodoobaby now 10 years old:eek:0 -
Actually I guess if I was "HARDCORE O/S" I would make the Amarettis myself BUT it would involve purchasing Amaretto AND using a lot of eggs and I have a wartime rationing approach to eggs that I cannot overcome!!!:pLaughing at my ancient signature...voodoobaby now 10 years old:eek:0

Hi, Just a thought but I bought mine in Aldi £3.99 for bigish tin. Hope you have an Aldi nearby....0

Aldi or Lidl seem to have loads of these around here. Plus, they shouldn't be too busy like Tesco or Sainsburys would be.:hello:0
