Mortgage application- using parents' address?

Hi all

Would appreciate some advice here, I've searched through previous threads and can't find anything that exactly matches my problem.

Basically, I may be applying for a mortgage soon (first time buyer). I've been on the electoral register at my parents' address since I was 18 and had the same current account since then. I've got mobile phones and a credit card, gym membership e.t.c..all registered at my parents' address.

The thing is, I've been renting and working in a different city for the past 4 years. I have not changed my address with my bank or any other credit providers in this time, as I have been renting and didn't see the point. I've moved 4 times in the past 4 years, so did not want to bother changing addresses as I thought it would affect my credit rating. I've not registered on the electoral roll here either, as I consider my parents' address my permanent home and I visit there all the time anyway. Another reason for this is I didn't want to keep receiving mail in my name to previous rented properties, for fraud puposes. I just wanted to keep things simple!

Anyway, I'm now getting concerned that putting my parents' address on a mortgage application which is in a different city to where I have a permanent job and where I will be buying, will look dodgy. I really hope this is not the case, as otherwise I think I should be in a strong position to get a mortgage (no debts, never missed a payment, decent deposit, same employer for over 3 years e.t.c...)

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Thanks

  • I would suggest that you put down the actual addresses that you have lived in rather than your parents address.

If you do not come up on the voters roll then the lender may ask why not and you can confirm to them the reason.

Just be careful that you choose the right lender for your circumstances and seeking advice from a mortgage broker may be the best option for your circumstances.

Get your credit reports based on parent's address and see what else shows up - take your judgement (or let a broker take the judgement) based on that as to what to declare in the core DIP/appplication and what to include in the notes.

The important thing is get through any automated DIP stage without a simple reject for duff address info - after that such things can usually be sorted out.

I would apply at your parents address, the lender will not be interested in the distance between your address and the area you want to buy in.
