Glass Jars - Thread updated with more photos

Okay so for those of you who haven't been onto it on the Candy Buffet thread Shrimping Shelly put a post up letting us know of cheap glass jars at asda.
Now I'm not doing a Candy Buffet... but I am planning on having some jam jar tea light lanterns on my path. (We're having our reception at our house). None of us really go through a lot of foods out of glass jars - and I am a little bit OCDy and could not stand the thought of them all being different.
Soooo following Miss Pixie's post I sent her a PM asking her for dimensions. Whether a tealight would be able to fit in her jars. She was sooo helpful and said yep they would and actually also said they weren't too tall either.
So tonight Mr Asda has just delivered (along with my groceries so saving delivery costs) four packets of three 'small' jars. (550ml each). I am absolutely over the moon with them!!
Photos time!
So here are the 12 jars. Cost £10 in total.

They are those clippy top ones rather than screw on top jam jars:

Now this sort of top wouldn't really go with the effect I'm after (tealight lanterns). So with a little bit of jiggerypokery I have managed to get the clippy lid off. (Eagle eyes MSErs would have seen the one at the front in the first photo had had its lid removed.)

One final piccie to show the size of them in comparison to a standard tealight.

So now I have 12 perfect glass jars for my tealight lanterns. I'm going to cover them in tissue paper to diffuse the light and make it more soft (PVA glue, tissue paper, PVA glue). Now I just have to decide on the design. Completely covered, covered with something like hearts left clear, or covered with the letters of our name left clear - our first names plus an '&' equals 12 characters.
Sooooo a HUGE THANK YOU to Shrimping Shelly for letting us know about the Asda jam jars, and an especially MASSIVE THANK YOU to MissPixie for helping with the sizes!! BRILLIANT!! THANK YOU!!! :T:T:T:T

You could cut out hearts or whatever you're looking at from fablon (the clear stuff they back books with), stick it on and spray with frosting spray. Peel off the fablon and you'll get a clear bit in the shape you chose.
Might be easier than tissue paper for a uniform look.
Saw it somewhere on a gardening site and they looked good, will post link if I come across it againMarried the man of my dreams May 4th 2012

I had considered frosting the glass - but I have PVA glue at hand, and some left over tissue paper so the MSEr in me says do it that way
We'll see how the first one goes lol.

If anyone else wants to have a go at this type of idea I saved up the jars from salsa dips as they are plenty big enough for tea lights, although these were for Christmas and I decorated around the outside of the rim with thin tinsel that you use for decorating presents, and really cheap bracelets from primark that were made from natural shell, just let your imagination run wild and you will find something to finish them off.0

Well tonight I've had a go at covering my first one...
Step 1 remove lid.
Step 2 measure and cut out a strip of tissue paper.
Step 3 print out letter, trace and cut out the letter on the tissue paper.
Step 4 cover jar in white PVA glue, place tissue paper on and cover in white PVA glue again.
Step 5 when it's dried pop in a tealight.
(I've actually got three tealights in there.)0 -

you are more than welcome. The only thing I would add though is a warning. PVA glue doesn't go full dry. It stays tacky and acts as a brilliant contact adhesive. So if you're doing these well in advance (like I have done) they will need storing apart from each other. The moment they come into contact with each other they will stick, then when you pull them apart you run the risk of pulling off some tissue paper. (As I did with my 'n' last night - d'oh). The great thing about this is that when you've finished using them you can remove all the tissue paper and glue and start all over again for a different design!
