Graduation Cake ideas?

Hi all,
We're having a big graduation dinner out for my son next week, and I'm wondering how to go about making a great cake! i have seen pictures of grad mortar board cap cakes, but unsure how to make the board part... Have any of you ever made one?

It can't be too fiddly, I have a 5th birthday cake to make this week for the weekend too!

Any help would be great, thank you!

My sons degree was in Electronic Enginerring so I made him a cake that was decorated as a circuit board. What is his degree in?

His was in Literature & Politics... hmm... a mini cameron & Shakespeare possibly?!!!

I like the books one angela linked to, I might put literature titles along the edges of the books... I'm still debating before i go and buy all the fondant!
