I second the advice not to buy packs of 'barbeque meat'. And if you're looking for something a bit different, a nice chunky piece of fish is fantastic. Last time I had a BBQ, I marinated a whole side of salmon in white wine, lemon juice, basil, garlic and pepper for 3 hours before grilling it on the BBQ. Went down a treat with lightly grilled corn on the cob, chunky strips of red pepper and a salad.

If you want to make burgers, buy a pack of mince from the butchers and make them yourself by hand. That way you can size them the way you want (big size for adults and little ones for kids!) and season them the way you want.

I'm sure this is probably a huge fire hazard but I usually fashion a container out of tin foil and put chopped onions in with a little oil and leave them to sizzle on the edge of the BBQ.

I got two lovely lemon sole for £1.40 from Tesco on Sunday afternoon, and they are selling BBQ fish tongs/utensil for £2.

I shoved the fish in whole, did 3 minutes each side on a hot bbq (if you can hold your hand 15cm away from the direct heat for 10 seconds, then it's the right temperature) and they were lush!! fed all of us and had leftovers for the next day!
  • We have a bumper pack of wooden skewers from a few summers ago, and we make our own special kebabs with button mushrooms, red peppers, red onion, baby tomatoes and chunks of halloumi cheese (£1.50 a pack, makes about 8 generous kebabs).

Bonus is, if you're crap at BBQing like me and my friends, it doesn't matter if they're not totally cooked :)

Remember to soak the skewers for 45 mins before creating though (stops them from burning too much).

I disagree with not buying chicken wings. Most supermarkets only do them in value ranges and are very cheap for what you get. Cut then in half to make for manageable portions
For nandos wings use some nandos marinade plus the nandos rub on top - tastes just like the real thing and is best on the barbecue

    hiya,

thought I'd mention our charcoal bbq, it's the best bbq we've ever had! We bought it brand new, from lidl, for £10..yes £10! it is large enough to feed 6 of us easily and that includes usually cooking sweetcorn (or similar) We can also cook potatoes, in a pot on it.

It's really easy to put up n take down and we take it camping too! (it matches our bell tent and we get loads of attention lol)

You can control then temperature by lifting and lowering the grill, so food doesn't burn but cooks properly, something most charcoal bbq struggle to achieve.

I can't work out how to upload pics yet, but will put it as my profile pic.

It's a tripod bbq, and we've already agreed that if we see them again at that price, we're having a second one.

I always bought the little cheap BBQ's and/or the disposable ones, but I've been spending so much!
So I bought a Gas one for £40 (Argos I think) and a Gas Cylindar (sp) for about £20 (or was it £30???) Its a nice big one and we've had that for a couple of years, having a few BBQ's and the gas is still full :D
 Thank you to everyone!

  • Get large white potatoes, cut lines into the top, mix crushed garlic with olive oil and wrap individually in tin foil, put them on early as they take an hour or so, when they're cooked they're filling and simple but the novelty of them being off the barbie works.
Go to a good butcher for your meat... You'll get better quality that doesn't shrink and isn't that dear, we got enough sausages burgers chicken drummers ribs and chicken breast for skewers efor over20 people for £45.
(And the butcher will marinade for free)
don't go mad on leafysalad, it rarely all goes and is hard to save.
Let other people bring a dish!
    Bump due 22nd September
