Tesco v's Asda

I'm just trying to meal plan and write a shopping list, normally I go to Asda because it's the norm for me and I get lost and confused in Tesco :o . Anyway, although Tesco is another half mile up the road than Asda I'm debating where to do my weekly shop! I do have 45p off in vouchers for Tesco and vouchers for 225 worth of points on top of what I buy!

Where should I go? which is cheapest? and where do you prefer?

    personally I much prefer tescos.

Im not overkeen on the meat from asda I have to say. And the one near me pretty much only has foreign veg, whereas at tescos quite a lot of it is british - which makes a big difference to me.

I would say asdas cheap for bulk offers - tesco doesnt have the buy 4 for 2 quid type offers that asdas do.

Tescos is cheap though, once you factor in the points, R&Rs and a whole host of other goodies ;)
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

I read somewhere that tesco had been increasing thier prices slowly and this article reckoned that weekly shop is £10 more than last year.

  • I went to Asda today and was told they have stopped accepting vouchers unless you actually buy the product. My nearest Tesco is miles away but I'm aiming to go there in future because of their vouchers/ clubcard points etc.

I went to Tesco this morning to do my weekly shop and I'm finding it dearer every week, I've recently converted from Asda but I think I'll be going back there again, Tesco don't have much (it's a small store) and the shelves are always empty and I've never had a bargain from there yet! Go to Asda it's cheaper, for me anyway :)

    Hi leni,

The regulars on the Shop but Don't Drop board should be able to give you lots of help with this, so I've moved your thread over there.

  • If you look at this Supermarket Comparison website you can do a "virtual" shop online, you don't actually need to buy, and find out which is cheapest.

Its handy to do say on a Tuesday/Wednesday when Tesco change their weekly offers.
  • To be honest, i find Asda better value, and prefer it to tescos. They do have great special offers most of the time. Tescos is ok but not my fav.

I use the mysupermarket.co.uk site and I alternate according to which offers are suitable to us. The basics tend to be the same price at either. Morrisons milk is £1 for 4pts tho' whereas Asda and Tesco's is £1.11

  • I was going to come on here and wax lyrical about Asda, but I just did a virtual shop on mysupermarket and Tesco were nearly a tenner cheaper (and it was only a £50 shop!), factor in clubcard points and that makes a heck of a difference so I may go back to them (if I can find some decent points vouchers around that will make my mind up for me!!!!).

I have to say I'm pretty shocked by that - I thought Asda were far cheaper

Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.
  • both Tesco and Asda can vary depending on individual stores, not only in what they stock, but also in what they charge for it. I have 2 tescos and 2 asdas in a 10 mile radius. In each case one of each is more expensive than the other and also one of each tends to stock more premium products. You know the type "best ever" ,"taste the difference" ,should be "pay the cost" to my mind. When you go shopping you can tend to substitute "better" brands for own brand or basic brand items if they are not available.Hence the price of your total shop rises. If you are looking for the best value supermarket don't assume that all tescos or asdas are the same. Their pricing structures seem to be dictated by competition and what they see as the local demograhpic.
By the way for anyone who uses ground coffee Asda are selling their own brand (anytime) at way below cost (£1 per lb) a price I have not seen in years. I have a feeling that with world coffee prices rising and set to rise further the price won't last. Long shelf-life grab it while you can.
