  • TBH pasta sauce is so easy to make and you know precisely what goes into it, I would never buy ready made it always seems too acidic.

Homepride Creamy Tomato and Herb for me.

I tried Gordon Ramsay's special Red Nose Day Wild Mushroom and Mascarpone sauce the other day, and was VERY disappointed- it was nothing special at all...[/QUOTE]

I felt the same about all of his sauces. I bought one jar of each when they were on offer to try and found each of them to be very disappointing from either being too salty to being too bland. What a waste of money

none of them, I find them all too salty for me. I buy chopped tomatoes for 33p and make my own.

I am the same here for spag bol and chilli con carne. Anyway, I find the CCC jar sauces TOO MILD for my liking.

I do buy pasta sauces when they are on offer - promotional wise or being discountinued at the store I am at the time (usually the one I work for). Never paid full price for one.

Worst cooking sauce had to be the Asda Chinese Lemon one - the flavouring must have come from a bottle of lemon washing up liquid!

Another vote for Lloyd Grossman and recently I stocked up on the lidl ones when they were part of the weekend deal. They are normally about 80p and have a green label I think. They are pretty good for the price.

I also make my own but I agree with the OP it's good to have some to grab when you don't want to cook:)

another vote for Lloyd Grossman. I like them all but my fav is the bolognese one. I usually buy them when they are on offer and get them for between 80p and £1.00 a jar.

Haha I totally agree! Not the best I've tried.. :D

I am a fan of the Lloyd Grossman ones too :) Still doesn't beat making your own though.

I usually make my own, but bought some Bertolli Basil ones that were reduced from £2.70 to a £1. They were a very good base ingredient, although I ended up adding extra onion, garlic, red wine, and basil.

If I did buy a sauce instead of making my own, I would go for this again.

I use passata and make my own with dried herbs - lots of garlic.

But for pasta bake I like is the Homepride creamy tomato or the dried Colmans tuna pasta bake mix, thast is gorgeous.

Simple water bath preservation (for high acid foods like tomato sauce) instructions can be found here:

Can you use this method for preserving soup - tomato soup in particular or is it just better to freeze HM soups?
