  • be careful with the quantities if its a bag of "broth/soup mix" that kind that as barley, dried peas/green&yellow lentils all mixed together.this kind is normally used to thicken broths/soups/stews etc

the barley will thicken the soup alot if too much is added

if they are seperate bags of lentils and barley you only need a "egg cup" full of barley enough for a large pan of soup.

you dont need to soak the barley

Making these types of soups isn't and exact science so it doesn't have to be that accurate.

If you have bought a 500g bad just measure out approx a quarter of it and you'll be near enough.

Measure this into a jug or mug or large yogpot and you will soon know how much you need for your family. It's all down to personal taste after all.

    Good luck with it.

i wouldnt use this mix to make to a soup from scratch.

think of it as adding texture to a stew or soup made from other ingredients

needs a long cooking time 2 hours plus.

Oh dear, just read this after I have washed and started soaking them, I am using shallots, leeks sweated, then adding carrots and potatos along with chicken and stock. Are you telling me I can now feed my entire neighbour-hood :D The packet says 24 hours

Just a little off topic , my daughter kindly managed to find me some pearl barley in Sainsbury (no go in tesco) I have never actually read the packet before just thrown in a handful. It says that I should be covering with cold water and bringing to the boil , then rinse in cold water again before I cook them... does anyone actually do this and whats it about ? Anyone?
