  • Missbunbury, I had the exact same, all my GCSE certificates were (and still are) in my known by name, which was never legally changed. Total nightmare when came to me applying for my job and passports as by then I'd gone back to my birth name as was too much faffing about lol.

OP, I'm in the middle of this at the moment. I get married next year and want to change my daughters' names, who have their fathers name. He hasnt been around in over 5 years (his choice, not mine or theirs) and am applying to deed poll to get them changed to what will be my new surname. The high school my daughter will be starting at come September have said it is fine to use her new name whilst awaiting for the deed poll, but if it isnt changed in time for GCSEs ( 5 years away so hope it will have been lol) they will have to be in her legal, birth name. So I think they can use a known by name for things like doctors, school registers etc, but would not be able to use it (unless is legally changed) for GCSE exams, passports etc. HTH

Known as names are not actually supposed to be used. If another person with PR discovers the correct name is not being used, they can contact the relevant person and get it changed.

They are used, however. It probably depends on the school.

They are, yes. But as I said, they are not supposed to. It's normally down the school's ignorance to the fact. An NRP can sometimes get it corrected (I state sometimes because a previous poster said a court refused the change in their experience) but there are many reasons they shouldn't be used, some already explained on this thread.

I had a known as name too at school, although not too bad as my Mum just dropped the last hyphened name on my surname. It still caused problems for me, having different names on different documents.

A school should correct it of provided with evidence of the correct name (as well as a PWC perhaps not being able to provide evidence of a name change).

If your ex is named on daughters birth certificate, then you need his permission to change her name!! Sh!tty but true.

I left my ex when DD was 3mth, and when my twins were born (DD was 3) and I wanted all my kids in same name. New partner didn't want his twins in my married name (fair enough) tried to deedpoll DD to new partners names. Solicitor said not a chance unless ex agrees, ex disagreed:mad: I wanted to take it to court anyway, but solicitor advised it would be 50/50 on the day, as the judge would look at the fact we wasn't married. But we ( ex, new partner and myself) all agreed with all kids being put into my maiden name. Third son was also registered as my maiden name.
When new partner and I married in 2002, when DD was 9. Three boys names changed reregistering them. And I wanted to change DD name to match her brothers. Luckly ex agreed to the change this time. So she was deed polled to my married name.

And when she entered high school i had to provide birth cert PLUS her deedpoll, otherwise she'd have been known as birth name.

As far as i am aware anyone can be known as whatever they like so long as it isn't for fraudulent purposes. BUT am willing to be proved wrong!!!:rotfl:

It is wrong hun, especially when they don't even bother seeing their kids!
In my case though, there was domestic violence (including prison sentances) so Deed poll have said I don't need to contact him to ask permission, so long as have crime ref numbers which support this fact (which I do!!) So just for info in case you have been in a similar situation.

Nope wasn't in same situation but knowledge is always useful!!!
Mine was back in 2002 so all been sorted for a while now.
    Glad you're sorted tho!!
  • In my experience, all three of my children have 'known as' surnames. (there choice to change name not mine). These were used throughout their schooling, both primary and secondary and all GCSE results were in their 'known as' name. Their father (who has nothing to do with them, and hasn't since the day we split) did try to dispute this but was advised that his only option was to take the children to court. However, because of their ages, the judge would take their wishes into account, and if they wanted to change their names, then he would not overule it.

All of their national insurance numbers, bank account, driving licenses, doctors details, passports are now in their 'known as' name. We have never had a problem with any organisation disputing this.
