It will just mean that I will probably not bother buying anymore:(
I still prefer vinyl, and I seriously miss the joys of spending an afternoon in the independent record store (ours had coffee on the go at all times:D) with a few friends just flicking through the racks and having a laugh. At my local shop the owner was great and you could listen before you bought and he was always coming up with new stuff for you to try based on what he knew of your tastes.
It's not that I don't like the new download and keep it in one place system at all (although I am always worried that I will "do" something and wipe the ones I already have by mistake:o) but that I enjoyed the actual ownership of vinyl (and to a lesser degree CD's) and the social interraction of the buying.
Was chatting to my sons about this the other day, and they thought it would be nice to have music shops like those of my day because it would be something to "do" at the weekend, even if you didn't always buy:)"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

May I suggest that holding your breath would be a very bad move?;)"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

The bit in bold, everso much.
Swapping a download via bluetooth or whatever is not the same. Lending mates cd's is so different. What about album cover art? In vinyl, cover art has always been a great thing. Some feel it has diminished with cd's, I'm less sure of that. But the art of the album as a whole, the notion of putting on an album (especially on a summers day) is being lost. The concept of the whole thing, the continuity and flow get lost, the context of certain songs. (sigh).
Pressing the shuffle button isn't the same. I don't get the euphoria for what is/may be coming next. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

I think they probably still do some artwork for the covers, but it isn't as "good" when it is so small, and you break the box just trying to get it open anyway:o:D
I don't suppose that todays youngsters will really know any difference but for those of us "olders" that do I think it is something rather special that we have lost:)
The great bit about the music shops was that you often heard something someone else wanted to try out that you might never have contemplated from the record in the bin, and that tended to expand musical tastes rather better than just sharing what your friends all like, imo anyway:)
Someone once told me that looking at my record and CD collection suggested I might have a serious multiple personality disorder:eek::eek::rotfl::rotfl: I refer to it as "eclectic" because it sounds more impressive:cool:"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -

I'd say different.:)
Dunno about you, but I still have it...;) The beauty of vinyl is it retains its quality.moggylover wrote: »I don't suppose that todays youngsters will really know any difference but for those of us "olders" that do I think it is something rather special that we have lost:)moggylover wrote: »The great bit about the music shops was that you often heard something someone else wanted to try out that you might never have contemplated from the record in the bin, and that tended to expand musical tastes rather better than just sharing what your friends all like, imo anyway:)
Hmmmm. Yeah, as well as radio and the like, and going to clubs etc. I think the thing with record shops moreso, is the opportunity to talk about types of music, bands, styles, artists etc, as opposed to links to "tunes". Music is too disposable nowadays, download it, listen, when it falls out of fashion, delete the file. Definitely not for me. I like to buy good stuff that I will return to.moggylover wrote: »Someone once told me that looking at my record and CD collection suggested I might have a serious multiple personality disorder:eek::eek::rotfl::rotfl: I refer to it as "eclectic" because it sounds more impressive:cool:
See this is the thing. People ask what kind of music I like. I will reply "good music". I can't bear the pigeon-holing of people only liking one particular genre of music. There's good and bad in all genres (except country & western...;)). But there is also my own context, my mood, the time of day, & how I feel to take into account to select what music is appropriate for when. People miss this.
I have over 4000 cd's I think. I also have a big vinyl collection - for those special recordings. There has to be variety - to go with my moods and so on.
Eclectic ain't the word...:rotfl:It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -

Oh yep, I still have the vinyl, but I meant "we" as in society, not just me.:) I've still got a bigger collection on vinyl than on CD because I refused for a long time to "replace" what I already had. However, now that I can't play tapes in the car anymore, I have given in and started buying a few bits and bobs on CD, and have even got a fair bit of stuff that I have downloaded (mostly those albums that I already have on vinyl or CD and refuse to buy again:)).
I'm not so keen on modern music, and I would have to say that I can quite see why youngsters find it so easy to just delete it and move on:o (or would my Dad have said that about mine I wonder?:D) and I'm entirely with you on only buying the things I thought were really good over the years: partly because discs were comparatively expensive in the days when I did buy quite a bit (but gigs a hell of a lot cheaper) and so you had to be a bit selective. Second hand record stores were wonderful fun as well: I always did love bargain hunting:D
I have a shaming admission here: I actually do have some country and western stuff in my collection:eek::o I particularly like some tracks with the slide guitar on: guitars and saxes are the two instruments that really "talk" to me.
I'm with you on the moods, and times of day, and even times of the year:D Perhaps we both have the same multiple personality disorder? But keep quiet about it or peeps will accuse us of being AE's;):D
*wanders off wondering if we actually could be, if we ARE both suffering from MPD*:eek:"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0 -
Vinyl truly is a thing of unparralelled beauty.

I am probably a complete old git, but well recorded vinyl played on a decent turntable through a valve amp, really does show how bad downloaded digital really is.0
