Money taken from my bank account - please help!!!

I have had £218.13 taken from my bank account today. I only noticed about half an hour ago and when I called the ank to query it I was informed it was taken by Scott & Co DC for Council Tax Arrears
The guy said they had been granted to take money by the Courts and tried for a payment of £340 but only took the £218.13 which makes NO sense as it has left about £80 in the account, so confusing! Im in Scotland btw
I have NO idea when I supposedly didnt pay CT, Ive had no letters from the council, Scott and Co, nada.
I lived in Glasgow all my life until 2yrs ago when I moved to another council borough and owe nothing at all with them, its all come as a shock tbh
They arent open till Monday now so I have all weekend to worry about it.
Has anyone had dealings with this company before?
What are the random amounts about, will the £340 be the whole amount do you think as that is what they tried to take or a whole lot more??
SO worried now

I have just checked Equifax and there is nothing registered against me via the courts, I am really confused!
Wouldnt it be logged if they had a court order or whatever it is to seize funds from my account???0 -

Court action in the magistrates court in England to recover council tax doesn't get noted on Equifax, Expereian etc. presumably the same in Scotand?
Has the bank account been arrested? That might explain it? Mistake or not.

As it's the weekend and the council is shut but the bank prob still contactable I'd be giving the bank hell asking to see the authority and ensure it is not an error eg someone if same name who hasn't paid their council tax.0

Ok so phoned the Sherrif Officer just now and its for a period of 4 mths when I stayed with my sister in 2009. I was on the tenancy and gave her money for the rent/CT and she didnt pay it!
The Officer said they had sent out numerous letters to the address (she still lives there) and normally try both our accounts but only mines must have had funds so they took the biggest amount from mine.
I feel sick my own sister could do this to me! The guy said they will try contatcting her again but if she continues to ignore it then they can go after money from my account.
Can they honestly do nothing to get the rest from her? I am seriously !!!!ed!0 -
How did they have your bank details for that address if you paid your sis for rent/ct. This seems a little unfair and wrong. How come its just the 4 months you stayed there ?? If your sis hasnt paid for the last 2 years or so can they chase you for that (they have your details) hard as nails on the internet . wimp in the real world :cool:0

I only lived there for 4mths as my dad died in October, they gave me the option to take up the tenancy but I couldnt afford the rent myself so my sister offered to move in if I made her a joint tenant which I did.
She made my life pure Hell and took a catalogue out in my name (they are still chasing me and I dont know how to report it as fraud!)
I moved out the start of January, came off the tenancy and went and kipped on a mates floor as I couldnt take anymore
I dont know how they got my bank details from the house as she took over all the rent/CT payments. My head was all over the place with my dad dying so I let her when I shouldnt have.
What I fail to understand is she is clearly still with Glasgow City Council for her CT as she still lives there, so why couldnt they increase her payments to them to reclaim some money??0 -
Unfortunately being joint tenants living at the address means both you and your sister are individually responsible for the whole amount due so they will take the money from whichever of you they can, all perfectly legal. You do not really have any grounds for arguing with them. The dispute is between you and your sister. Just ensure the council are aware of the dates you lived there so you cannot be held responsible for any other times.
As for the catalogue account, just report it to the police and the catalogue company as fraud by your sister. That is the only way anything can be done about it.0 -

*sigh* I thought as much.
She will not pay this other amount, I know her. I was hoping they could at least try to get the other half of the payment from her as I have already paid to it!
DO i call the local police station and report the account as fraud, will they give me any refernece details to give to the catalogue compnay?
I appreciate the help0 -
The police will give you a case number if you report the catalogue account fraud - which you can give to the catalogue company as "proof" that this was a case of ID fraud. It will then get investigated.
The council tax, unfortunately, you are liable for.DEBT FREE 3rd Sept 2011
