Beetroot Bread?

Options
I've just come back from a not very moneysaving couple of days in Bath, and had the most amazing beetroot bread in a restaurant. It was a gorgeous deep purple-red and tasted great. I figured if anyone on the net would know about this, it would be you lot! So, how on earth would I go about mixing a beetroot puree into bread dough? Use it instead of some water?

Thanks for any tips you might have :)

    According to this

the beetroots are juiced (presumably from raw) and the juice used to make the bread (presumably instead of water)
Sorry not to be more definite but when I saw your post I was hoping for a recipe myself as it sounds amazing!
  • Woah, that sounds amazing. I'd like to know too please!

    Beetroot Bread

This is the prettiest bread I have ever seen. It has a pink crust with a yellow centre (brighter if you use the onions) with pink dots of beetroot. Ideal with soup or a stew.

    5fl oz water
    1 cup grated raw beetroot
    2 spring onions chopped (optional)
    13oz white bread flour
    1/2 oz butter
    1tsp salt
    1tsp granulated sugar
    2tsp dried yeast.

Cook on the basic/normal setting - medium crust if you have the option.

I tend to bash the beetroot into bits with the food processor rather than grating it.

    Might try this myself!!
  • I think this recipe is the same as the one above except in metric measurements (it's one from my college handouts). I've made it a few times and it's lovely.

    150ml warm water
    140g grated beetroot
    2 spring onions
    375g strong flour
    15g butter
    7.5g salt
    5ml sugar
    5ml dried yeast

Make a dough from everything except the beetroot. Prove till doubled in size. Knock back and knead in the beetroot (I've found that you need to add a bit of extra flour in with the beetroot). Prove again till doubled. Cook at 230ºC for 30 minutes.

The recipe asks for raw beetroot but I've used the cooked, shrinkwrapped beetroot you get from Aldi/Lidl and it's been fine.

I've really taken a fancy for some now, might make some tomorrow :)

I've seen this too, not got a link at the moment, but the beetroot was grated into it.

Nice with some homemade soup! ... but not beetroot soup :)
  • Thanks for all the hints, and the recipe! I don't think that it's similar to the one I had, as it was all smoooth and purple-ish. But I'm now thinking I might try it with beetroot juice and see what happens. I'll let you know!
  • i tried beetroot bread at the good food show and it was really nice, i'v never seen it on sale tho
  • Ooh never heard of it before. Will have a go replacing some of the fluid with beetroot puree in a day or two.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
