Dollys' Discombobulated Debt

Herewego - your booze cruise reminiscences reminded me of 20 years ago when I worked in Edinburgh. We would stay up all night going to the Edinburgh Festival, have a quick shower in the office basement (for those who cycled to work - ahem!) and then go straight up to our desks and do a day's work!

Ahem, yes remember in the dim and distant past, worked in a lovely cocktail bar (I know I know, working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, when I met you), strange as I did meet my husband there, we split after 10 years, so what does that tell you!!!
Anyway back to the story, we used to finish at about 12 midnight, then across the water on a ferry to night clubs of Portsmouth! In those days they used to close at 2am, but we would often then finish off at a party and I had to be back at work at 8am. I remember many nights not sleeping at all. Now it takes me all day to get over a hangover (had 3 glasses of wine last night with dinner and had to go and have an afternoon nap (just woke up) as not feeling quite right. must be my age or something...................
On a lovely note, lovely person sent me a PM asking if I still needed a laptop sleeve as she had one going spare, and also she offered me a copy of the potato peel pie, Guernsey war story book. How lovely and generous is that? I have just recently bought myself a new laptop sleeve (cheap one from ebay) but she is sending me the book. I am really touched, I will be putting some cash in the charity box of the BHF in return. So a big thank you to Greyfox, for her kindness. Hi Dolly
Great story about the ferry and party escapades!
So kind of Greyfox to send you the potato peel book. It really is brilliant and so shocking. At school we all learn about WW2 but never about what the Channel Islands went through when they were occupied. It's made me want to go there. and find out more.
Anyway, hope you have a good rest of the week. Is your brother still there for more top days out?2012 Saving challenge £1000/£400! Woo! :wave:0 -
Enjoy Guernesy Dolly! I've never been, I'm a Northerner so it would be quite a trek for us
Have a great day, hope the weathers good for you xx0 -
Feeling a little
as not been on here for quite a while!
My Brother had a lovely week with us, and although I spent a little more than budgeted it was worth every penny. He rarely gets out so it was nice to treat him. Trip to Guernsey was lovely although we only had 3 hours there, and horribly delayed long trip home, with lots of vomiting on the ferry by other passengers!! nice way to round off a lovely day.
I was so good, v proud of myself, i only spent £30.00 and that including lunch and a bottle of wine, did take a look at lovely jewellery shops but resisted each and every one. Also the lovely cosmetics in duty free, v tempted but resisted again, the force must be strong.
Have also resisted shiny new tesco apart from food for meal plan, and went shopping at 9pm on a Saturday night (how sad is that) and picked up untold bargains, all organic meat - straight in the freezer and still only spent £30.00. Have enough food for two weeks, wey hey.
At the same time treated myself to a lovely bunch of flowers that cost a grand total of £1.50 reduced down from £20. They look marvellous and still in tip top condition.
On the PPI reclaim front, hmmmmmmm have had two letters from Lloyds, to say they are looking into them. Egg being a bit awkward, I sent the template letter asking for information as cant find my account details, included cheque, and copies of marriage certifcate and proof of address as have changed name and address since I last dealt with them. Took a month to come back to me saying I need to resubmit everything to them with their forms completed, what a waste of time. But all sent off today again, and I await their response. I will keep at it with them and hope it pays off. Just a couple of months ago I would never have dreamed of challenging the banks in any way shape or form. Just shows what a wonderful place this is and how it changes lives!
Saturday had lovely tutorial in Southampton with new tutor who although I had my doubts turned out be fantastic! Went with my OH and we had lovely lunch out, but again resisted the shops (and they have lovely shops there). So all good here, hope everyone else is doing fine out there.
Busy, busy week, but will try and post a bit more often.
Have a good night y'all
Dolly x
oh have confession to make made a spur of the moment purchase this pm on a very reduced sewing machine, have been hankering for one for ages, as going to do some alterations to clothes rather than take to tailor, and am fed up hand sticthing things, bought for £20 down from £40 but is total c***, so will take back and get refund and see if anyone has anything on Freecycle instead. very MSE!Sealed Pot Challenge #1247 = £111.41/£5002011 Made on ebay to date £368.31 (exc P&P)Freebies £15 Amazon VoucherDFW Nerd * 1366, DFD September 2013 :jThe large print giveth, but the small print taketh awayTom Waits, Small Change :mad:0 -
You sound like you had a great time with your brother the memories are priceless.
Keep going with the PPI claims I have just had an offer on some charges I have been chasing for over a year of £271 which is a full refund plus interest, this one I really didnt think would pay out. What keeps me going is the thought that if I didnt have any debt that wuld have paid for a nice weekend away.MARCH 2016 DEBT £25750/ £25035

Hey Dolly
Glad to hear that you had a nice week off with your brother. Sounds like you are being sooo strong, well done you. :T I have to say that before my LBM I used to go into town almost everyday. Now if I do for a walk at lunchtime, I don't take my purse. Your flowers were a bargain!
Hope the sun is shining where you are.

Thanks herewego, as you say its a matter of keeping on it, they are a bit sneeky as I sent all the paperwork in the first place, but because it did not include their form (which is just listing my address and name change) they would not accept it.
All done now so will sit and wait to hear from them. Glad to hear that your persistence paid off. As you say at the moment going toward debt but not an insignificant amount and better in your purse than their's.

Hey Rock Cakes, good to hear from you, hope all is well with you and yours?
Like you, pre MSE my main source of entertainment was shopping in town every single weekend, both Saturday and Sunday. Not surprisingly I don't do this anymore! Good idea about leaving the purse at home. I am now on the cash only kick, giving this a try to see if that works any better for me. It does already feel a lot more uncomfortable handing over cash, i think this is what kicked in yesterday with the sewing machine, its on its way back though today. I will remind myself of the 24 hour rule, before buying anything on the spur of the moment in future!
Sun is shining brightly here, hope it is for you too Dolly xSealed Pot Challenge #1247 = £111.41/£5002011 Made on ebay to date £368.31 (exc P&P)Freebies £15 Amazon VoucherDFW Nerd * 1366, DFD September 2013 :jThe large print giveth, but the small print taketh awayTom Waits, Small Change :mad:0 -
Hey
I'm in a much better mood from the last time when I contaminated your thread with negativity, sorry for that.
Have heard from the university that I don't need to the GCSE English seeing as I have a PhD. Its lucky I emailed as well as called. Cause on the phone the woman was adamant I would have to do the GCSE. On the email, same person, not required. Waiting to here if I have an interview. If I don't get in, will try again next year I did apply quite late.
I agree about taking the money out. Me and DH take out £30 for the week, we treat it as a competition to see who has the most left. I didn't spend anything last week. :j DH has made a form on google docs which we can access on our phones and every time we spend, its entered. I have to say I just used buy things, even if I didn't need it. I am trying to get out of this habit, tis difficult but I am sure it will be worth it.
Such a beautiful day today.Looking forward to my walk home.
