Handmade Children's Party Bags

Has anyone got any ideas for making your own party bags for a kid's birthday party? It's my son's 5th birthday in May (thinking ahead!) and I would like to do something a bit different to the usual plastic party bags that you get at every party!

I thought of maybe doing some brown paper bag filled bags and decorating them on the outside with the child's name and a pirate or princess type picture (it's going to be a pirate party).

Or I just came across a website that does handmade party bags and they are cellophane tied bags filled with whatever and they look really pretty. I do love doing stuff with cellophane gift wrap and think these could work out quite economical and look a bit different:

Anyone got any ideas they can share for cheap but nice fillings and just how to do handmade bags rather than just getting the plastic Ben 10 type party bag from Tescos?

when we had a pirate party and we used plain black paper bags and then we printed the stickers on here http://parenting.leehansen.com/Printables/Stickers/pirate-stickers.htm

and we wrote individual names in white on each bag, we also didnt give them at the end we gave them the empty bag in the beginning and they had to earn their loot during games and we kept them in a big treasure chest that i made during the games

My daughter wants a Blue Nose Friends themed party next month. I have bought plain blue paper loot bags off ebay. I will print off the children's names onto labels to stick on each bag and then print pictures of the different characters onto other labels to seal the bags. Inside will be whatever prizes they win during the party games, a kit kat which I'm going to put personalised labels on ("Thank you for coming to Hannah's Party") and a personalised keyring (see the beaded keyring thread) and a piece of cake. I'm also going to look on redhouse or the book people to find some cheap book collections so they will each get a book. The party bags will cost under £1.50 each with the most expensive component being the book, so could be done a lot cheaper. I like the idea of the book though instead of plastic tat that will be in the bin within a week.

Last year I did an A5 colouring book (created in word and printed off so very cheaply done) and a pack of crayons (tesco value packs which were about 19p each) a bracelet for the girls and a car for the boys (both got cheaply off ebay) and a little cellopane bag of sweeties (bought a few packs of sweets and split them up between the bags).

Home bargains sell white paper sandwich bags with handles, I think they are 20 for £1 - you coud personalise these with each child's name and stickers. One year I did something similar, but decorated them with pictures cut from old comics, and the guests all loved them

I'm planning on doing something similar for my niece, whose birthday is even further away - in October.

I've been collecting some paper takeaway bags from my canteen at work. And I plan on decorating them (not sure how yet, but probably paint, stickers etc).. I'm going to knit and crochet some stuff e.g. purses, flower broaches etc.

Not very useful for 5 year old boys though.....

How about a decorated cookie. You could make up a plain batch and then paint a pirate theme picture on them. Or you could just write the child's name on it/thank you for coming to XXX's birthday.

YOu could always make up some sweetie bags. I know a lot of crafters buy big bags of sweets and divide them into smaller celophane bags with a cardboard topper. If you could get hold of some chocolate coins, they could be pirate's treasure.

As it will be nearly summer, how about a pack of cress seeds with a small plastic cup.
  • I made these for my little girls birthday party with the childs name on the front. i used transfer paper to put each name on white cotton then sewed it onto the organza bag i had made. Each one only took about 15 minutes to make.

    and put tissue paper inside.

    These are fab!!! :)

I use kraft bags, liket he brown ones dizzytina has posted (although I use white). I won't buy platsic ones - I try to be kind to the environment ;) - and usually I try to put in something they will use rather than lots of plastic toys.

Last year I put in make your own kits for the children. The girls got pretty felt daisy chain necklaces and hairbands, and the boys got mini wooden rockets to paint and build (I only had 10 at the party, would have been too pricey if there'd been more though).

I had a paint your own pottery party for DS when he was younger so they took their masterpieces home as there favours :)

This year for DD 4th party they will take home the cupcakes they make at the cupcake bar I'm creating, along with fairy wings and swords which we're making at the party.

If it's a pirate party, what about making little hesian bags containing 'treasure' (chocolate coins and/or sweets) for the priates and an organza bag with jewells for the princesses?

You could even get the childrent o decorate their own bags as party of the party????

  • Hi! I've done personalised bags before and bought them Birthday Creations .You can get lovely white paper gift bags for around 20p, just the right size - not too big and get the children to add their own decorations with stickers etc. The site also sell some lovely wooden party bag fillers. if you wanted to get something different. They have also got some lovely pirate party fillers!
