It's called Monosodium Glutamate, and it's a flavour enhancer. You can get it from most asian shops.

MSG is used as a flavour enhancer. Please be careful if using this when cooking for people. Some people are allergic/sensitive to MSG and this condition is nicknamed Chinese Restaurant Syndrome because it has been claimed (but there is conflicting evidence on this) that their symptoms were caused by the quantities of MSG used in preparing Chinese restaurant/takeaway food. This is not limited to Chinese food but 'named' as such because it was first 'documented' as such.

  • Talking of chickens, I was driving down the road the other day when I was passed by a three legged chicken running down the side of the road. I was amazed as I had never seen anything run so quickly so I put my foot down and followed it. It ran into a farm and so I asked the farmer about it. "Ah yes" he said, "we bred those specially because at meal times I like a leg, my wife likes a leg and my son also likes a leg". "That's amazing" I said, "what does it taste like?". "Don't know" he replied, "we've never managed to catch one"!!

p.s. What would KFC be called if Colonel Sanders lost his glasses?

    Morning all,
In another thread, I have just explained to my 9yr DS that our Friday night takeaway is no more.
He was quite happy, but I don`t think its sunk in yet.

McD`s was easy, he eats the fish fingers, so can just buy those.
KFC is slightly harder, as I have no idea how to subsitute the coating.

    Does anyone have ideas?
Quite prepared to make from scratch or buy a cheaper, longer lasting product.

Also, fries, whats the best oven chip to use - I don`t fry anything, not even eggs!

This is fab, although you don't need to use as much buttermilk as it says. You could cut the chicken breasts into small pieces for a nugget type meal.

If you want fries that look like McDonalds and KFC, then Lidl do a bag of very thin oven chips for about 50p. They are a perfect match.

DS gets them with his fishfingers as an occasional treat.

    INGREDIENTS

    Chicken Pieces (approx 2lbs)
    1 cup buttermilk
    1 cup flour
    1 teaspoon salt
    1 teaspoon pepper
    1 teaspoon paprika

    oil to fry chicken

    METHOD
In a large dish place chicken and buttermilk, making sure that chicken is all coated. Leave this for no less than 30 minutes to marinate.

In a plastic bag mix together the flour, salt, pepper and paprika. Shake well to combine.

    Heat oil to approx 190oc

Lift chicken out of buttermilk and allow to drain.

Place chicken in bag with flour and shake to ensure that they are well coated

Place chicken in oil to brown or fryer

Cook until golden and juices run clear when pierced

Drain on kitchen roll and serve warm with chips and dips or coleslaw :)

    Hi Samantha,

There's an earlier thread with some more recipes so I've added your thread to it to keep the recipes together.

    These threads might help too:

    Kfc Sweetcorn ????

    KFC chicken wraps at home

    kfc beans ??????

Thanks for moving my thread, this is far more than I expected.

Would anyone marinate the chicken in these recipes?
