Please can anyone who already has solar panels please help me. I phoned NFU mutual, with whom I took out home and contents insurance in September, to inform them that I am having my solar panels fitted on Thursday. They asked a series of questions and when I got back from work they had left a message for me to contact them. I did, and the long and short of it is , that they will not insure my house with the solar panels on because, as I will be selling my excess electricity back to the grid I am a business:mad::mad::mad::mad:
I have pointed out that I will probably make less than £50 selling back to the grid and I could make that on e-bay without them knowing but they are unrelenting. Apart from the fact that I do not have time to phone around a lot of companies I am horrified. Nobody ,that I have read comments from even mentioned this as a possible drawback to solar panels.
What makes me even more angry is that I did tell them when I took the policy out that I will be getting solar panels in the near future. They told me to give them a courtesy call when the work was about to begin..so glad I did.. NOT:mad::mad:

Hi, I'm with esure home insurance and they had no issues at all about the solar panels, didn't increase the premium and said it would be covered.0

smartn. Thank you SO much for replying. Can I just check do you own your panels? Not sure if it makes a difference but just in case. Really stressing over this as I will be at work for the next few days and obviously can't phone around to get answersEnough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0

I wouldn't even have minded if they had put the premium up a little bit after all there will be £15000 of kit on my roof but to not insure me at all:eek::eek:
Sorry really upset woman here. I have already phoned which who recommended NFU:mad:Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0 -
Yep, I own the panels. Give ESURE a ring, they are very competitive and I have it in writing from them that the panels will not affect my cover. I think NFU are being very shortsighted!0

I think NFU are short sighted too. In fact it hadn't even crossed my mind there would be a problem. Esures lines close in 5 minutes so it will have to wait until tomorrow but I will be calling.:)Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0

I own my own panels, have done for more than two years
Have been with the AA for home insurance and currently with the pru. Both have been absolutely fine with the panels (PV, like yours)
Good luck
Edit: was £10 extra with AA, £0 extra with the Pru0 -
Thank you mcfi5dhc now at least I have a selection to try. Four years ago we had a leak from a pipe inside our wall so we had to make a claim which means not everyone will take us on so a selction will be good.Enough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0

I'm with Lloyds TSB Insurance, and they accepted the solar panels (installed 2 months ago) without any quibbles or increase in cost.0

Thank you Hetty17. Spent the evening trying the companies already quoted but I am also in a flood plain if the company use a blanket cover. If they use an individual post code my risk is less than 0.3% so this will give me another one to try after work tonightEnough money to live on so retired early...planning to see where life takes me:D0

My panels (self owned) were installed two months ago. Insurance with Liverpool Victoria and absolutely no qualms about covering them with no increase in the premium.
Why yours are being so silly I have no idea.0
