'Postcode envy' New iphone app

Postcode Envy panders to two great British obsessions - class and house prices - so I bet that this little app will sell well.

Postcode Envy doesn't do much - just tells you the average house price in a given postcode area, puts your neighbourhood on a scale from Trashy to Minted and then gives you some cheeky little comment like "if you know someone who lives here, please help them escape".

It covers only England and Wales, but does seem to update its information regularly which is good.

Thing is, once you've searched for yourself, your mum and your friends - then there's not much reason to use it again... though the Random Postcode button is quite an interesting way to explore the UK.

Still I think this will sell - did I mention it's about House Prices?

Not sure of the accuracy of this app, just did a search for my parents location as it couldn't find mine (being a new build), it says the average house price is 112k. According to houseprices.co.uk, the cheapest house for the postcode I entered was 217k in 2000...
  • Maybe someone could write one for renter filth envy where renters envy the extortionate prices they are paying generously towards their landlords mortgage.
  • Why no Scottish prices then? Presumably they are going up so fast, they can't possibly update the app enough?

The postcode average must be on a wider scale then, maybe just the "AA1 1" level, rather than all the way to "AA1 1AA", or even just at "AA1" level. So, waste of time .... and people PAY for that sh1te???

A lot of apps are free, even those that aren't are usually 59p - so my kids tell me.

If you are looking at snob value, there is the ACORN classification:

Though in moving "up" the classification only seems to improve the quality of your junk mail. Estate Agents junk is now printed on glossy paper.

I was going to suggest Acorn. I've been watching Acorn for a long time now and its interesting to see how much areas change on it once a major new research piece comes out (such as the census). In the four years I've lived here it has gone from a type 26 to a type 25, reflecting the greater number of houses that have been rented out in that time to young professionals. In that respect it is spot on. I access Acorn for free via upmystreet.com.
