Can I suggest to the OP she contact her union for advice before making any definite plans. I thought the poster who managed to reduce to a 4 day week did well. Any employer would have to consider a request for part time working even if they may not ultimately agree to it.

I just think with a £20,000 debt it would be a real leap into the unknown to leave teaching without a definite job lined up.

Shortly after I left teaching I was diagnosed with cancer. The operation and subsequent treatment left me far too exhausted to contemplate teaching. I was lucky enough to be employed elsewhere where I could juggle my hours to allow rest time when I needed it.

With regard to TPS....... noooo.........don't stop paying it for as long as you're able.

Typically pay an immediate pension with no reduction for early payment and, possibly, with some extra years enhancement of service

Could you step down your pension, and take a less stressful job in teaching. This way your pension pot is index-linked for the future. Speak to your union they will know all the ins and outs. Best of luck, from retired teacher!
