Clarity Debt collectors??? old debt?? Help please

Hello and thankyou for reading this.
Its my first post so I may not be very informative so bear with me.
Basically I recieved a letter on Friday from Clarity saying that they have bought a debt of mine and I need to get in touch to pay it.
I'm not sure what this debrt is but its the amount of over £1700.
Basically all I can think it could possibly be is a old credit card I had in 2001ish - definatly before 2004. I'm pretty sure I was around 18. long story short I hit my limit, and never really heard anything from them - so didn't pay...
I can't think of anything else it could be. I've heard of companys buying old debt that over 6 years old, and wondered if this could be the case.
I have a account with credit expert and there is no record of this on my file.
I read that I need to send a Subject Access Request letter to clarity.
Is this correct?
Its just they are phoning my mums house - where I've never lived. So would like some advice on this please.

Whatever you do don't acknowledge the debt, if it's over 6 years old they cannot get you to pay it. They will have bought the debt and hope that you just pay up without asking any questions.
Write to them and ask for proof of the debt including statements from the credit card company etc, specifically stating that you don't believe that you have this debt. They'll soon realise that they're going nowhere trying to scam the money out of you and give up.0 -

Any tips for how to word the letter. I've not rung them or anything. I'm going to put everything in writing, and they don't have a number for me - so I'm not going to give them one. I'll just ask my mum to tell them that i don't live there and hang up.
Is there anything I need to put in the letter? anything I shouldn't put?
Do i need to send it as a SAR? and send the payment or is that more like a second steps letter?
Sorry for all the questions, and thankyou for your answer x0 -
Doesn't need to be a SAR, or send any payment to them at all.
Perhaps something along the lines of the letter in this link.

As said above, do not send them any payment. Just send them the letter in the link above and that should be the end of it. For peace of mind send it recorded delivery so they can never claim not to have received it. Don't talk to them over the phone or do anything else, and certainly don't acknowledge the debt or pay them any money.0

Right I sent the letter off recorded - but I've misplaced the tracking number grrrr!! so cant check if its been delivered.
I sent it the 2nd and have a letter which arrived today dated the 7th. Which is saying that "we wrote to you recently but records show we have not reached an agreement with you" and that "If you ignore this letter further recovery action will take place"
What do I need to do now?0 -
Letters have probably crossed over in the post then.
If you get anything more from them after this, then perhaps resend the letter?
In the end it's either not yours or statute barred, so there is nothing they can really do apart from write useless letters.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB
