OAPs' tea party - which cakes?

My friend's got 10-12 elderly ladies coming round for afternoon tea on Sunday - some kind of social services arrangement. I said I'd help with catering, but need some suggestions on the kind of cakes I could make. So far I've thought of choosing from:

- Victoria sponge (definite)
- Chocolate Swiss roll
- Madeira cake
- Jam shortbread
- Lemon drizzle cake (definite)

Not sure about fruit cake in case it's too rich for them. Any thoughts or other suggestions?
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

Hi wigginsmum, you NEED a fruit cake, from my experience of working with the elderly,it is one of the most popular cakes before Battenburg, not that I'm a cake connoisseur, but 'man I love cake'.
    Enjoy your afternoon tea.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

Fruit cake, battenberg, victoria sponge cake, lemon drizzle cake, and ginger cake all go down well when i do tea parties for my oldies, also cream scones.

i am always amazed at the amount of cakes little old ladies are able to consume in one sitting:rotfl: :rotfl: and don't forget to allow extra for the ones that they wrap in a serviette and take home for later. i think this is compulsory too.:rotfl: :rotfl:

    good luck with the event

Tea loaf, banana loaf, scones...I laughed at the comment about them wrapping them up and taking them away! Superb!

Hope your friends tea party goes well.

If you want a really quiet tea party give them a couple of toffees each hehehehe
  • I would include a diabetic (sugar free) cake too :)

meringues are always popular with oldies! and chocolate eclaires! my mum loves them and shes 83! it maybe a nice idea to provide them with a little doggy bag of several buns/fairy cakes to take home this will be realy popular as most will have to rely on shop brought things! and save them finding squashed cakes wrapped in napkins in their handbags for months to come!
