Come down to Birmingham and visit the jewellery quarter, you can't go wrong! It's a good excuse for a day out, there are some nice places to eat lunch and you get a whole day looking at lovely shimmery shining things.

My ring is from the jewellery quarter and it's lovely - but then I would be bias! Seriously though, anyone looking for engagement rings that can get to Birmingham should seriously considerate it. The choice, quality and prices are great.

    I agree.
I love the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter. Something for every taste and budget.

Well after the walking on air post last week here's the moan of the day ...............

I know it's not massive in the grand scheme of things BUT at the weekend OH and I bought my engagement ring online

we got it from diamond heaven it arrived today and it's pants :( OH got it whilst I was at uni I didn't get in till 4 ish so had to wait til then although I knew he didn't like it already.

I like small and simplistic so we ordered a .30 ct diamond with a princess cut to it on a platinum band. On the site the pics they had looked like it was a decent ring.

On seeing it though the state of the band is horrific it is the thinest band we have ever seen and would break so easily (not what you want from something you want to wear forever) You can see a join in the bottom of the band (the palm side of your hand) and it is slightly bent out of shape (not good when it's new)

Have been in touch with them and they are going to refund it but that can take between 10 - 14 days :( so gotta wait even longer to wear my ring

I know there's nothing you guys can do lol but just wanted a moan I guess feel dead disappointed by it.

Be careful what you get online is the moral of the story I guess dunno what I want to get now not sure I trust online and think the high st rip your eyes out. May well just not bother with one at all ......is that too unconventional ??

    thanks for listening
    xx

    Hiya

Not all online retailers are bad! I got my engagement ring from https://www.bluenile.co.uk and have no complaints whatsoever. Choice of individual diamonds and settings was excellent, delivery fast and quality second to none.

Ive just had a quick look on their website and you can get a diamond the same size as the one you already picked for £200 ish. They have an amazing array in that size/shape. The platinum bands are priced from £420 for a 2mm width band up to £750 in a heavier 3mm band.

So in theory, you could have a custom built ring for £620 (or less if you go with a different sized/shaped diamond) and you'll know that you and your partner have put a lot of thought into the particular diamond that was used to create your ring.

  • Do you specifically want platinum? You could commision a gorgeous tanzanite and white gold ring for that price!

And I've also read the book! Great book!

I had to Google but it's this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pillow-Talk-Freya-North/dp/0007245920/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1285708743&sr=8-5

Was such a lovely book and by coincidence I read it in Kenya. I ended up giving it to the lady who arranged the safari where we got engaged.

What a lovely reminder to buy it for our honeymoon!

(The main character in the book is a jeweller and has a fascination for tanzanite, in case people are wondering why we're rabbiting on!)

Doh, and its even in my flipping bookcase, how thick do I feel now :rotfl::rotfl:
:rotfl:Ahahah got my signature removed for claiming MSE thought it was too boring :rotfl:

I fell in love with an unusual broad gold ring with a diamond set into it. I had it for my engagement ring, and when we married, I just took it off for the ceremony and he gave it back to me. Very MSE :D

  • I loved that book so much, and I have a tanzanite engagement ring! It's been my favourite stone for years, purple is my fav colour closely followed by blue, and I love how the colour of the stone changes in different lights! My ring is white gold, and the tanzanite is the main stone with two tiny little shoulder diamonds either side.

Maybe your OH would consider something like that as a compromise, so that it has diamonds and tanzanite? Perhaps you could get a custom design to incorporate both, if your budget will allow.

I know you said you weren't keen on the High Street but mine came from H Samuel for about £150 and I love it so much. I know that Ernest Jones have tanzanite rings too and where I live (north of Scotland) some independent jewellers had them as well.

Oh, your story sounds so much like mine!

My first engagement ring was a nightmare. Brought me out in a rash and everything (again, bought online). So we got another one (dared to go back to eBay) and it is the most amazing ring ever!

I broke 3 fingers approx 2.5 years ago, and had to have the ring cut off - I was heartbroken. But the damage to your ring sounds similar to the way my ring looks now (bearing in mind it had to be cut off, and re-joined by the jeweller who did a wonderful job!) however, mine isn't misshapen...did they provide any reasoning as to why it was received in this state?

  • my ring is tanzanite with two small diamonds on either side, its shrunk (thats my story and im sticking to it. it has nothing to do with me gaining weight lol) so I dont wear it but i do love it. Its been sitting in the dresser for months waiting to get stretched and when I tell someone that Im getting married they never go 'oh lets see the ring!'
so i wouldnt say it was unconventional at all

though you should make OH get you the ring you want. We could be engagement ring twins too :)

Hehe. You should have it extended being that it is so stead fast on shrinking - that'd teach it a lesson :p
