John Lewis V's Comet

Options
Hi all,

Stumbled across this site today researching haggling tips because I've not tried it for a long time but I'm about to make a big purchase...

I'm buying a new laptop but the only places that seem to sell it are Comet and John Lewis... for the same price (apart from Comets online price which is £50 cheaper)

Having read through the forums I've been totally put off buying from Comet and it seems they wouldn't haggle AT ALL anyway... So...

Is John Lewis a good place to try haggling (could I get it down £50 to match comets online price?)?

I was hoping that comet would just sell for their internet price instore and then also be willing for some warranty haggling and extra items... but it seems this company has absolutelly no intention of making sales...

Am I better off trying John Lewis?

Thanks very much in advance for any input :A

John Lewis warranty also seems to be 2 years...

Do a search for threads on these forums for Comet and all your questions will be answered. Based on those, you would be extremely unwise to buy from Comet and I would never consider buying from them again. I would rather pay a bit more to go with a more reliable company. John Lewis are also supposed to be quite good on the price matching if you meet the criteria which I think is on their website.
  • Hi OP

I can't comment on the price matching bit, but JL ARE very professional, reputable, and customer focused. I love them.

I do know what it's like being on a limited income/wanting to get the best value for money, but i try to remember the old adage 'you get what you pay for'.

    cheers

We recently bought a DVD recorder from JL.

Our daughter sent us a DVD that she had recorded using the wrong format disc (she swore she had checked). We couldn't get the disc out or switch the machine off,so we rang JL. The young man we spoke to didn't know what to do, but said his mate in another branch would, and took our phone no. An hour later (with an apology for the delay!) his colleague rang, and talked us through getting the disc out.

That's the sort of thing that gets you loyal customers.

    NO contest,

JL in my opinion every time even if it costs a little more, for the reasons others have said and also, if you are right about the 2 year gaurentee (it is 5 years on tvs) then my guess is that is 12 months longer than comets
  • JL excellent for electrical purchases - they definitely give a 5year guarantee on TV's. Friends of mine have just had to use theirs after having the TV for 4 years so they are delighted they bought at JL.

Also they are generally very good on customer service.
  • Aye I'm very tempted to use JL now... So glad I did that one last google search :)

I'll try sweet talking em a bit and mention they have a rival in comet... Buying 2 has surely gotta encourage a discount!!

Anyone know if the 'warranty trick' works with em? You'd think companies would have tagged onto that by now...

    Thanks for the input :)

John Lewis will only officially match other store prices, not internet prices. I know my local store will not budge on this policy, but have heard that others may. So maybe worth a try?

Even if they won't price match, I would still go with John Lewis.
    Gone ... or have I?

John Lewis customer service is second to none! I cannot recommend them highly enough - superb!

A few years ago I bought a TV in the sale. It was sold as a returned item but with a full extended warranty, 5yrs free of charge. The TV had a dodgy suround sound speaker and the whole system was replaced with a brand new one despite being sold in the clearance because of being a returned item. The result was a brand new wide screen, suround sound TV at a clearance price.

Their sales staff are very knowledgeable and helpful.

My OH has now been converted to using JL too!!!

I have managed to get Comet to price match their online price in the past, but it was about 3 years ago so I don't know what their current policy is. We had looked at the prices of fridges online, and got down to a shortlist, but decided to go along to the Comet showroom to have a look. Having made our decision, we were about to go home and order it from Comet online (about £50 cheaper) when up popped a sales assistant. We told her of our intention, and promply said she would price-match. She filled in the form, which said the price match was being made with Currys!
