All those things may be superflous but I go to church regularly and having my children christened was about bringing them into my faith however I do feel the invites and getting together with family afterwards is important as it is an important day and in my eyes should be a celebration.

Fully agree - a celebration it should be - but does that need to be dressed up with all the invites, costumes, presents, expensive catering etc? I think if I were doing it I would make the invitations a personal phone call to tell people I would love them to be with us on a special day to do a special thing. The rest would be simplicity itself, back to the family home for a pot luck get together which everyone contributes to. Much more personal and memorable to me. I feel the way life events are being built up into fantasy realisations dilutes the real meaning of such events. They leave me wondering how long it will be before I receive an invitation to "come and celebrate with us the delivery of our new sofa to its remodelled sitting room" - a bit extreme perhaps but just trying to illustrate how I feel we are moving towards a life where how an event happens is far more important than the event itself.
