Cooking with olive oil, cheaper way if you're interested?!

Several years ago I made a decision to stop using standard vegetable oils for frying. I'd done lots of online reading about commercially refined oils and wasn't happy about the processes used nor the fact these oils seem to be touted as being 'healthier' for you than, say, butter. The fat content is the same! (Plus my FiL worked for Unilever all his working life, and being told, again and again that 'Stork' is the best thing ever does remove the scales from ones eyes..!!) Butter tastes better as we all know. Butter also is relatively pure and unrefined. Anyhow I digress! I decided to only buy olive oil (naturally cholesterol free) & butter (Or ghee) for frying and started buying bottle after bottle of extra virgin olive oil from the supermarket. Then I started buying bigger bottles, but it was still expensive. Finally I did some more reading online and found that, super-expensive extra virgin olive oil is only used for 'drizzling' or 'dipping' on your yummy breads. Not for cooking. Unless you're a millionaire or like me, not too savvy.;)
What I found was, the Greeks, the Spanish and pretty much all the peoples of the Med use olive oil for cooking, yes, but they buy pomace (or frying) olive oil. It's like the third grade pressing of the olives. I haven't seen this in supermarkets, maybe you have. I buy my olive pomace oil online for approx £14 a gallon. Previously I was buying extra virgin oil & cooking with it at a cost of £35 (or more) a gallon... Duh! I have to order enough cans so I get free P&P but forming a consortium with neighbours & family isn't difficult. I've been very happy with getoily.com but I'm sure there are many other importers just as good.

Yep. Coming from the med myself pomace is very common, you can get it in most Asian supply shops in towns all over the country.
We use Safflower oil for most of the cooking as this is what I'm use to but TBH Pomace is as good and probably cheaper.Five exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

I'm used to using Sunflower Oil (as lived a long time in South Africa), but now use Olive Oils which I get from Aldi. A cheap one for cooking and a better one for dressings and drizzles. Thanks for the idea of the Pomace. Won't be able to get it locally or online, but good to know about it. Thanks0

£35 would be £7.69pl for EV
I have a "rule" not to pay more than £4pl for Extra Virgin Olive Oil..
not always available at that price, but on offer often enough to keep a stock.. (OK may not be the very best .. but still EV )
Why are you paying that much (£14per gall) for Pomace .. you can get 5l ( over 1 gall) for £6 at tesco... ( according to http://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/tesco-price-comparison/Oils_And_Vinegar/KTC_Pomace_Olive_Oil_5L.html ) and cheaper still at cash/carry, but thanks for heads up I'll try pomace if its as good for cookingAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -

Just checked the can, stupid me, it is 5L. The Extra Virgin (Bio Cana) oil I buy is an organic one, but I don't mind paying a bit more for something so delicious! I've tried a few other olive pomace & plain old olive oils for cooking and some of them aren't very nice at all. The Sperlonga one has become 'our' oil of choice. Haven't seen it in the tiny Tesco's nearby, we're way out in the countryside here - a cash & carry would be 20 miles away or more! The KTC oil I haven't heard of before, might buy one of out curiosity if you reckon it's decent ???0 -

Lidl's excellent 'award winning' olive oil is £1.99 a litre at the moment. I've been using it for ages and it's fine. As a tip I have put olive oil and water in a spray and used it like fry-light. Cuts calories on things like wedges etc.0

KTC is a blend of pomace and vegetable oil. If you are using olive oil for health and purity reasons then you don't want to be using an unknown vegetable oil. It could be an unhealthy oil (olive oil is a good source of mono unsaturates) or it could have been produced on land previously occupied by illegally felled rainforest, you just don't know.
I discovered pomace oil when I was looking for a cheaper olive oil to use for soap making. Some ethnic delis and grocers sell it as well, for about the price quoted by the OP. I was told that it is extracted from the stones and other olive waste.0 -

add at end of that "by using loads of chemicals" if my memory serves me right. Did read about the health aspects of using pomace olive oil at one point - and promptly decided not to buy another bottle of it.
So - its worth anyone wanting to buy that oil checking it out on Google to see what the position is re the health angle on it.0 -
