Freezer doesn't work in the cold?

'Fraid this is what I was told when I tried to purchase an upright self- defrosting model from JL last January. It was to replace the large chest freezer we'd had in our garage for the past 27 years with no problem. However, further research showed that BEKO make a few models which are OK in this respect. This is what we went for in the end. I really wanted not to have to defrost one as I found bending to clear the bottom difficult and thought that was a problem likey to get worse as I get older! So, we now need a cold winter to test it - any problems and it'll be back to the chest type and defrosting!Resolution:

A simple solution is to cover the freezer with a bubble wrap " tent" with a few inches air gap between the freezer and bubble wrap. This can be suspended on string etc fixed to hooks in the ceiling or roof space. The heat from the compressor stops the air getting too cold so the freezer works as normal.

Is this a tried and tested offering?
I wanted a freezer in the shed but as I'm in the (very cold) Highlands of Scotland, I haven't been able to find a model that might work.
Would happily buy wads of bubble wrap if it did help. Knowing my luck, the bubble wrap would burst/freeze/get eaten by beasties/insert any other thing that might befall plastic etc etc etc.Herman - MP for all!0 -

New freezers won't work in the cold due to modern coolants. Modern freezers have a climate class as explained here by WHich?:

Scroll right down. Basically the best you can get now is the SN class, which will work from 10 degrees C upwards.0
