  • Well, we're not celebrating as such, we're going out for a few meals over the next few weeks, but I am rightly keeping the pressure on saving up and not change our lifestyle - I think this year will have huge changes as it is, but it's just the fact that in this upside down world we just don't know what is going to happen over the next few, so by saving and living sensibly is the future me thinks. Do you have any ideas as to what I can do to celebrate with MOM?

Think of things that you and Mrs OM won't be able to do again for a few years once the baby arrives, or not so conveniently anyway, and do something from the list.

  • We're planning to stop our gym membership as we're not using it well... And it'll save a pretty penny.
In the heavy snow yesterday, we went for a gentle long walk and generally acted like big kids. Something we won't be able to do once little 'un is here.
More money saved through a cancelled gym subscription too! Smashing stuff.

Hi there OM, I just wanted to say that over the course of the last week I have read all your diary and really enjoyed it. As I was part way through I was wondering whether a little OM might feature in your plans and then I saw your update post so many congratulations with that, I look forward to reading about the arrival of your BOM (baby OM as I have named him/her) I can see that you already refer to your OH as MOM which now has a whole other meaning :D

What you have achieved is amazing and I had a suspicion as I was reading that you would blow your original MF date out of the water and indeed that is what you have done so well done you on now being technically mortgage free; what a great position you are both in to start your family and I can see your MSE ways continue

Lol re you and MOM behaving like kids in the snow, don't you worry, I'm sure that BOM will bring lots more opportunities for that rather than less!

PS, I noticed at one point you were taking about your telephone bills; did you know that you can pay your BT line rental a year in advance and save £55? It works out at £10 a month if you pay the £120 upfront, I've just done it myself and I'm very pleased

    Regards

  • Pleased that you've enjoyed the thread so far, I have to admit it's pretty mundane on this as I keep on overpaying every month until we're completed. Pretty simple in comparison to other people but we all have to work with what we've been given.

I like the family of OM, MOM and BOM as a growing family - I'll use BOM from now on - thanks for that :)

Finally, thanks for the tip about BT - It's something I'd like to investigate. Sounds like an "easy" way to save over the year, so I'll see what we can do. I'm being a nerd and looking at our budgeting today, will see what our financial position/outlook looks like, in terms of salaries, budget and what not. As we've lived within our means for the past few years, I don't anticipate we will have to make many more cut backs, to live sensibly as we don't have too many excesses.

Will report back some point with my findings!

  • Anyway, half term is drifting, all in waiting for things to be delivered/returned/replaced or fixed. I'm now incredibly annoyed with the concept of people who say "we will drop in between 8-1" as it's such a long time of day for you to sign for a parcel and them be on their way in 20 seconds. Never mind. That said, life's not too bad really is it.

  • Well, had a letter from FD today telling me that I had more saved in my combined mortgage overpayment and current account than the total mortgage, and I should ring them up. So I did.
I've paid off all the mortgage (remaining £500 has gone, as I can get the balance on the mortgage to zero and still keep it open to pull down money should we move in the future) and have reset the savings account to be unlinked from the mortgage "pot" to start being a savings pot again, although it has no money in whatso ever, not even a penny!
