council tax - approx £1400 per yr ,0

definately council tax0

Council tax is almost 2.5 to 3 times bigger than my next bill (gas + elec).
It's a shame really that it's such a big expense but there's no money-saving that can be done on it!
Rent though is almost 6 times more than council tax  Bring on the HPC!0 -
With taxes (and deficit spending) using up more than half of our GDP, are we surprised that Council Tax comes top of the list?
What do I as a pensioner get for my 157 quid a month:
Bin emptied once a month.
Fly tipping removed when I make enough of a fuss about it.
A speed camera that put 3 points on my licence at 08:00 on a Sunday morning outside an invisible school.
Local roads rapidly going to pot holes after I get to the public highway.
A local planning system that is poorly administered and that has been nationalised by a quango.
A police force - they did offer me a lift once because I was on the streets after midnight and they decided a chat night be useful/pass the time.
Library - though if I'm not careful the fines become self financing.
A school/child minding service - it seems a pity that the teenagers don't seem to appreciate the fortune being invested in their futures.
A "country park" an open area mostly maintained by volunteers, while the quango eyes up its value as "regeneration" land.
I really must make time to try to understand their accounts to discover where all the money goes, after paying the wages and the pensions.0 -
Cigarettes, at over £300 a month. I read something at the start of the year there are about 3 taxes due on cigs, not to mention all the health issues and the strain it puts on the health service, the pollution andI have to include this in the budget, make sure I don't spend too much on food to allow for this expense however the biggest bone of contention, I don't smoke0

My biggest bill is motoring, particularly if I include a proportion of the cost of purchase each year. The total cost is, of course, hidden as it comes in so many forms - road tax, fuel duty, parking charges, cost of purchase, repairs, bridge/tunnel tolls etc. It will get much worse if road charging is introduced.0

Interesting one for me.
Council Tax is £2400 for the year and thats roughly how much it was costing me to drive to work everyday.
I have started car pooling which has reduced the fuel to just below council tax.....but the council tax is shared by my partner and my flatmate so that brings it lower again. Saying that my council tax does NOT include getting my bins emtied as I am in a block of city centre flats and have to pay the factor to empty the bins and the factors fees are an additional £1200 pa!!!!
Basically its between fuel and paying council tax / factors fees! They are both a long long long way higher than all of my other costs on the list and are even more than food! Here to help and be helped!0 -

If I include all of the motoring costs as opposed to just fuel then my commute to work seems so bloody expensive I must say! Moving closer to work is not an option as house prices are ridiculous and that would just mean my OH has a big drive back to her work insteadHere to help and be helped!0
