Mortgage protection policies

I moved out of my last home 8 years and four months ago but have been paying mortgage protection payments each month for my old property which I no longer own.
I have had no paperwork from my policy provider, as they do not know my new address, despite canceling my DD in the past only for the payments to resume again (as the DD a/c was not deleted by my bank) and no communication being sent to me. The policy covered a much lesser amount of mortgage then (£49k)than it does now (£168k).
Can anyone advise me if I can reclaim all my 8 years worth of payments as I guess I am not covered for the property I have lived in for past 8 years.
If so............. how do I go about reclaiming. I want to call their customer services and confirm the address they have against the policy first, so I can then go through the correct process and what I should be saying to them. If successful they owe me £1,800 plus.
Any advise or help from others who have been in same position would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers - Hotpeppa

Payment protection doesn't relate to the address.0

Did you ever contact them to cancel the policy? Cancelling your DD doesn't cancel the policy, and if you've previously signed/otherwise agreed to a mandate, I believe they can reinstate it.
If you haven't cancelled the contract, they have no liability (on these grounds) to pay back the premiums. It's different to a case of mis-selling - however, if you were mis-sold the policy and it NEVER really covered you, you may have a case.Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0 -
Have a look on martins website and see if you can find info on PPI
There may be a template letter you can download and send off but you need the policy providers name and address ( contact your bank)0 -
Thank you everyone for your helpful responses,
I'll contact the building society and go from there.
Cheers!

Its also not clear if this is Mortgage Protection (i.e. decreasing term life insurance), or Mortgage Payment Protection. Either way, as has already been pointed out, its not linked to a specific property or mortgage.0
