Using other people's vouchers?

Does anyone know whether you can use supermarket vouchers in other peoples' names? The reason I ask it that since moving into my current house I constantly get Sainsbury's offers for a previous resident. I have always sent them back to Sainsbury's saying not at this address but they just keep sending them out. They're not the type that are using the points she has earned - although I am sent those also by Tesco (I return them) - they're just the "spend £25 get £5 off type". They do have her name printed on them. They're far better than the ones Sainsbury's send me - do you think it's ok to use them?

  • I am up there with the best of the bunch when it comes to handing over vouchers and I am not preaching but just giving you another persepective. Isn't it illegal to open someone else's mail ? what if she came to you next month and said that she had evidence that you were opening her post and redeeming her vouchers and she got funny with you.

Yes I know it is highly unlikely but it could happen - be careful. If the vouchers did not have a name on, yes I would use them but because they are personalised I would be very cautious.

Hmm, I agree with you Welshy but there is a way to avoid any evidence that they were redeemed by you JennyB....use them in Tesco! :rotfl:

Tesco do accept these vouchers, no problems, and they cannot redeem them anywhere (they accept them as a loss-leader).

I feel the previous occupant of your property should have arranged postage redirection (or updated her details with Nectar & Tesco by now).

I'd like to make a couple of points here. Firstly, in theory, you could use those vouchers, as Sainsbury's (or Tesco's) tills will accept them. That's how people use their friends' or family members' vouchers, or ones bought on Ebay.

However, I also feel opening other people's post is very dodgy - you wouldn't like people to open yours, would you?

Yes, it's true, the previous resident should have told Nectar she's changed address, but maybe she has, it takes ages for companies to update their records (in this hi-tech age ).

Anyway, having recently moved myself, I've seen what a shambles the Royal Mail redirection service is (we've had 4 items delivered to our old address ), so you can't always tell who's done what.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I should perhaps have clarified that this person hasn't lived here in years - previous owners didn't know who she was so she can't have lived here for at least 7 years.

In terms of opening other people's post you've made me feel completely guilty! :o But really I have repeatedly tried to get Sainsbury's to stop sending stuff here - returning the post unopened might I add - so I figure after a year of still getting stuff I'm not too in the wrong to open it. :)

Dormouse - Royal Mail redirection is completely rubbish. I've had cause to complain to them before and I was told by them that if they deliver more than 3 items to your old address after the redirection starts then they'll refund your money - worth a shot by the sound of it! :T

    Hi Jenny,

Thanks for the explanation - 7 years is a very long time! And sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel too guilty, and especially under these circumstances I probably would've done the same :o:)

And thanks for letting me know about the redirection thing. Thing is, I complained twice about it, and they never really got back to me, so guess I need to chase it up.
