Ta Sazbo. Been on holiday, visiting my mum in my native Italy. I won't tell you about her  cooking  because this is Gingham's thread and it ain't fair on her. Suffice to say that mum owns a largish orchard and garden and most of our fruit and vegs come from there - fertilised by manure from nearby stables, so all organic and yummy...
Gingham's ideas come pretty close though... and show how easy it is to eat healthy and inexpensively when we put our mind to it - or in this case Gingham's mind, on our behalf.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Glad you had a nice break with your mum, Q. Couldn't agree more re Gingham's excellent thread. Now we're into September I'll be using my sc more - can't wait to try her broth and sausage casserole recipes. Only cooking for myself, but reckon these are perfect recipes for making ahead and having leftovers to take to work for lunch. Can't wait! :j4 May 20100

Gingham - this is fabulous!
I thought I was the only one who had a partner who fried meat and added it to dishes at the end as you mention earlier on in the thread!
Except he does it most of the time rather than just sometimes...I wish he'd attempt a meatfree meal just some of the time!! At least I have managed to steer him from the cheapest value mince, I could barely bare to have that stuff in my freezer!0 -

nope! I've go one of those too.
Although I have to admit her prefers cooking seperately as he reckons it tastes nicer cooked with the meat at the beginning.
He cooks lots of veggie stuff for me though so I cannot complainSometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -
Thanks Gingham
I've been a veggie for a number of years. Most of your recipes I have tried or regularly make myself. However, your recipe for Lentil Lasagne looks delicious and I'm definitely going to make that :j
My boyfriend isn't veggie but as we eat together most nights, he now eats loads of vegetarian meals and says he now eats a much better diet because of me :T He even prefers Quorn to chicken and hardly ever eats red meat anymore (although working in Cornwall the pasties are hard to resist!).
Hoorah for vegetarians and I hope your menu plan will inspire some of the meat eaters on the board to try a few veggie alternatives a couple of times a week.0 -
Couldn't find broth mix in Sainsbury's. Could I make it myself, assuming it's pulses and suchlike?
And could you say which recipies are good in the slow cooker? Apologies if you've already put it in.0 -
The broth I HAVe actually made without the broth mix. It's up to you what you put in. I would say pearl barley and dried green peas are the 2 essentials, but red lentils and split peas would be good too. Remember to soak overnight and add the veg and stock as I described. Brown sauce still an essential ingredient in this house!
I don't have a slow cooker so someone else will be better qualified than me to answer, but I would imagine that the lentil bolognaise could be done in it, as well as the broth and the butternut squash soup. The curry and chili too I expect?
If you're making a chick pea curry, remember to cook the chickpeas seperately first, or use a tin.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Hi GR I have tried some of your recipes this week and they have all gone down really well. I've done the lentil lasagne,Pasta bake and sausage casserole and they've all been gorgeous, they will now become firm family favourites. Thankyou so much for your recipes.

Tried the casserole yesterday, I used cauldron lincolnshire sausages along with carrots, parsnips and a very large leek! As well as some garlic for my cold. We also had it with mash. These sausages are currently 2 packs for 2.50 at Sainsburys which is great.
It was really lovely although the boyf did make mutterings about how it would have been nicer with "real" sausages. I think the cauldron ones are delicious myself! I have some leftovers for lunch at work today0
