Can I ask if anyone has any replacement ideas for onion? Especially for frying up with garlic and olive oil (which is the base for just about everything we eat!).

Is it because someone is alergic or because someone doesn't like it? If it's little ones that don't like it it's often the texture and not the flavour so you could cook up a big batch, blitz it to a paste and then freeze it in portions the add it to everything - all the flavour without the texture.

Sorry, I probably should have said, I'm on a migraine elimination diet atm (though am falling off the wagon big style today :o). It seems to be all my regular foods I have to avoid as well as stock, bullion, tomatoes blah blah blah. As I'm vegan and already sensitive to wheat, oats, yeast and allergic to bell peppers it's making meals a bit tricky for my lovely hubby who cooks everything.

I'm going to have to stick to it because I have classic migraine and seem to have developed acephalgic migraine, Cyclic migraine and abdominal migraine which is normally only seen in children. Yes, if I was a horse.... :o

Sleepy, what a nightmare. I used to get blackouts with migraine so I really do sympathise. (Suddenly remembering regularly having to crawl to get to the loo incase I fell over or passed out...)

I use leeks in place of onions often. Or I miss them out altogether.

I found this on the internet:-

Substitutes: white bulbs of leeks OR shallots OR green onions (Cook these for no more than a minute.) OR chopped daikon (salt and rinse first if serving raw) OR garlic OR asafoetida powder (This Indian spice has a strong, pungent flavor and is used as an onion substitute by people who can't eat them for religious reasons.) OR fresh herbs

I'm guessing that leeks/shallots and green onions are out and have no idea what 'daikon' or 'asafoetida powder' are! (Oh and I have no idea which religion excludes onions - and why  )

What about trying finely chopped celery or even grated celeriac for a change?

Thankfully I haven't had blackouts Gingham, just everything else lol :o

Oddly leeks, shallots & spring onion are in but we haven't been able to get either atm, hopefully soon though.

Hubby made me soup with leeks t'other day, I don't like the texture of them so he blended it... big mistake, it turned into a bowl of sludge :lipsrseal but I think he used the leafs rather than the bulb.

What I'm hoping for is something which can imitate the taste and texture of onion convincingly, which frys up well with garlic. I was thinking of trying horse raddish, have some in so will just have to try and coax hubby to experiment (the poor man :o).

Hopefully I'll discover onion isn't a trigger and don't have to avoid them for long. I love onions I do :D

Thanks for the help girls, it's good to get as many ideas as possible

  • Fennel might be worth a try. I think that's in season.

Daikon (Lidl sells them as mooli)

    Asafoetida powder

Some Buddhists don't eat onions or garlic for religious reasons.

Thanks Gingham for such a great thread and for giving me new inspiration. Even though I`ve been a veggie for over 20 years, I often need new ideas and I have been reading your thread with interest. Keep up the good work !
