Only just come across this thread, GR. I've been a veggie for 23 years and have also got into a bit of a rut, so this is brilliant!Gingham_Ribbon wrote:Veggies: If you're careful about eggs, be careful with Quorn as some of their products have non free range eggs.
Actually, recently Quorn changed all their product formulations; they now all contain free-range eggs and are approved by the Vegetarian Society:beer:C'est le ton qui fait la chanson0 -
mah_jong wrote:Thankd for the info, I have never seen chillis in bottles and we only have chillis in packets, (2 red and 2 green) in the shop I go to. BUT I will see if they are named, I do know they are hot... I have a bottle o schwartz (sp) crushed chillis, I'll try that .
Meanwhile if I am ever in a big supermarket I will look for the jars!
Am practically sure those chillis (2 green, 1 red) are jalapenos. That's basically the choice I get here, unless I go to one of the massive out of town Tesco's or similar. They are still hot, but there are other varieties a lot hotter. If they are too hot for you, remove the seeds - I have a cast iron stomach and eat them whole, especially the pickled ones in the jars!
I read a wee tip somewhere the other day when chopping chillies to put some olive oil on your hands first, and that way your skin won't absorb whatever it is from the chillis that nips like mad........if your touch your face or eyes.0 -
Gingham_Ribbon wrote:Broth: I use the broth mix (I think it's called 'country soup mix) from Morrisons. not the kind with pasta in. Broth should have pulses and barley. I soak half a packet overnight then rinse clear top up with plenty of water a couple of stock cubes, a big dollop of brown sauce a few grated carrots and a large chopped leek. Potato or turnip also good in it. I like it thick so you could stand a spoon in it, but DH waters his down. It takes about an hour and a half on gentle simmer, but check it earlier. It's done when the green peas are soft enough as they take longest to cook.thriftlady wrote:Definitely do broth in the slow cooker Saz
I make broths quite a lot, I usually add some beans too and lots of veg. I serve them with a pudding after just like Gingham suggests. They are very filling but I always feel I should provide a pud in case OH feels shortchanged by just having soup for dinner
Righteo. Here goes. I've got me broth mix out! Taken me a while to get round to it, but going to soak it tomorrow while I'm out a work. See what's cheap in the veggie line - maybe buy some leek, swede, spuds to add to it. Then tomorrow night stick it all in the trusty SC with some stock - and hopefully, come Saturday, will have some tasty broth for lunch! Can't wait!! Thanks again Gingham. :money: :money: :j :beer:4 May 20100 -
Just wanted to say broth was fab Gingham. Did it in my slow cooker, topped with a slug of olive oil and some grated parmesan - eating it now, lovely. Thanks! :j4 May 20100

Heres one I made today, and it was delicious.
Loaf of bread (20p sainsbury yelllow label), top cut off, and middle taken out so you have a kind of well. Put olive ol on the inside, and bake for twenty minutes.
spread pesto on the inside (tesco 47p yellow label), and add a layer of sliced tomaotes (Tesco 45p yellow label). Layer with olives (big jar very cheap) and jalapenos (the remains of one from when we cooked tortilla chips.) adda a layer of caramelised onions (60p for half a pound yellow label) and a layer of buffalo mozzarella (yellow label, about 50 p). top with more tomatoes, and a few basil leaves, stick the top of the loaf back on wrap in tin foil, and stick a weight on top, and bake on a really low heat for about two hours.
Its like a twist on Calzone pizza, and you can stick just about anything you want in the middle. It can be a bit dry, so a tin of tomatoes with onions and italian herbs tops it off nicely.
