Dr brown's baby bottles (reduces colic)

Hello!

I'm searching (after being advised by my health visitor) for Dr Brown's / Lindam Baby bottles that reduces colic etc in babies.

It's a new type that is apparently "amazing" in reducing colic and prevents the teat from colapsing etc.

Anyhow, the downside is that they are very expensive in comparison to other bottles, but if they actually work I would be more than willing to give them a go. My latest addition is 2 weeks old and suffering a bit at the moment with the dreaded colic / wind.

I've found this site that sells them at quite a reasonable price:

http://www.shop.edirectory.co.uk/babybitz/pages/moreinfoa.asp?pe=BFICGHEQ_+Dr+Browns+Baby+Bottle+Twin+Pack&cid=1814

Has anyone any experience with these bottles and would you recommend them?
Also if anyone has spotted them on special offer anywhere, I would be a very happy Mummy!

Thanks for your help
;)

We use dr browns following advice from midwife/health visitor.

We had purchased the whole advent range and our son just threw/dribbled the milk all round him, loads of wind, up avery couple of hours (couldnt get enough down due to wind).

Midwife/health visitor told us to try dr browns, they are fantastic (even if they are quite expensive).

I don't know the ins and outs of them, but they have an internal bit that does all the air so the baby doesnt take it in.

There are also bottles called B Free, they are exactly the same bottles but the insides are a different shape. In the chemists i have been in the B Free and Dr brown bottles are mixed together, the packaging is the same and they appear to be made by the same people.

I would actually go for the B Free, they have a blue plastic bit inside that allows you to shake the bottle and stops the milk running out. You then take the blue plastic out before feeding. To explain this - because of the airflow, if you shake these bottles the milk comes out and goes all over.

Anyway, they have made our life much more peaceful.

All our Advent gear was a waste of money and is gathering dust in the cupboard.

PS our son was born december
  • Can confirm that Dr Browns bottles works wonders. We started off with the avent but our son had terrible colic. Moved onto Playtex - not sold everywhere, in our area only sold in Moss Chemists - these had a completely different shaped teet that seemed to help. However they used plastic type bags which you pushed the air out of before giving to the baby. Thus reducing the air intake. However this became quite expensive what with having to purchase new bags.

Finally moved on to Dr Browns and haven't looked back. Yes they are expensive but well worth it.

    Thanks for your replies guys!

Found them in Mothercare.com £20 for 4 which seems the average price and will give them a go. My poor little boy has been looking sorry for himself today, poor baby!

He's actually been prescribed "colief" drops that you put in the feed by the Dr (after much ado), my partner whose a pharmacist insisted that it was the bees knees and a miracle cure. Apparently drs don't like prescribing it becuase it's over £10 a bottle that only lasts for 3 weeks. How they can put a price on a baby's discomfort I don't know.

Details about how it works on https://www.colief.com. I don't know if the Drs around other people's area already prescribe it or not, but if your little one is in serious discomfort, I would raise the question of it's availability. And be wary of the dr or midwife / health visitor putting a dampen on the product simply becuase of the price. It's really helped my 2 week old baby. It takes a few days to work but you should hear the burps he gives out now!! I'm not trying to promote it or anything, just my personal experience. No one ever mentioned it when I had the same agonising problem with my first child 2.5 years ago.

    Taken from the website:

    What does Colief do?
Colief does not provide a treatment for colic, nor a cure. The addition of Colief Infant Drops to the baby's usual milk merely compensates for a possible temporary lactase deficiency in the child's digestive system. Colief Infant Drops added to baby's usual milk greatly reduce the level of lactose in the feed by breaking this down into glucose and galactose, before the baby is fed. Studies have shown that the hours of crying may be greatly reduced when baby's usual milk is treated with Colief.

    What does Colief contain?
Colief's only ingredients are Lactase Enzyme (which should be naturally present in normal gut), Glycerol ("Glycerine" - which is also naturally present in the body as part of the process of converting fats to energy) and Water. None of these ingredients has even been shown to pose a risk to health.

Anyway, off to buy some Dr Brown / B free bottles, thanks again!

i just bought some colief today, haven't used it yet because you have to leave it in the milk for at least 4 hours before feeding, so we'll see how the next bottle goes. i'm relieved to see mentioned above that it lasts 3 weeks, it's such a tiny bottle i was worried it might only have a few days worth in! it was £9.99 in boots and the assistant says you earn points and can also buy it with points. i will try mentioning it to the GP when he has his 6 week check, but i don't hold out much hope of getting it prescribed, hopefully the colic will start to get better at around 16 weeks as it says on the colief instructions.

have any of you tried omneo comfort milk? it's made by cow and gate, £7.23 a tin in most places. glancing at the ingredients lists on various milks it seems that the omneo has much less lactose (less than half the amount in the others). that might be a cheaper option than the colief and it worked really well for my baby but unfortunately he's a very hungry baby and is growing fast. he wants feeding every 2 hours at the moment (even though the omneo is a thicker milk) and the sheer volume of milk he drinks is causing him discomfort. i have been trying a hungry baby milk instead but that gives him back the colic that the omneo got rid of. they don't make a hungry baby omneo so my best option seems to be the hungry baby milk with the colief.

i couldn't find the dr brown bottles when i looked, but tommy tippee have a new range called health check, £9.99 for 2 bottles in boots. they have the same valve system and a variflow teat. unfortunately they are a different size to the other bottles so i can't use the nuby teats with them, splodge hates them because nuby teats are the only ones he can latch onto. so the health check bottles are sitting in a cupboard. might be worth a try for anyone else who can't get hold of the dr b ones though, especially if buying from boots with all their various points promotions.

edited to say i have read a bit more about colief and a review on dooyoo says the bottle only lasts a week. apparently there's enough for around 80 bottle feeds or 40 breastfeeds, so depending on how many feeds baby is having it could last longer than a week. it should last ten days for me.
